No. 11 Friar Women’s Cross Country Team To Compete At NCAA Championship On Nov. 23

Friars earned an automatic bid by winning NCAA Northeast Regional and will travel to Madison, Wisconsin for Nov. 23.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College women's cross country team  will compete in the NCAA Cross Country Championship on Saturday, November 23. The race will be held at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. The women's 6k race will begin at 10:20 a.m.

The Friar women will be returning to the NCAA Championship for the fourth consecutive year and 32nd time in program history. At the 2023 championship, the Friars earned a 28th-place finish. The Friar women's team has won the NCAA title twice in program history, in 1995 and 2013. In 2004, former Friar Kim Smith won the NCAA Championship and became the only individual winner in the history of the women's program.

Thirty-one teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large.

The Friars qualified automatically for the NCAA Championship after capturing the 2024 NCAA Northeast Regional Championship on Nov. 15. at Hopkinton Fairgrounds in Hopkinton, N.H. The Friar women's team placed first of 39 teams and was led by senior Kimberly May (Auckland, New Zealand), who finished third (19:34.32) of 268 runners. 

After May, leading the way for the women at the NCAA Regional was graduate student Alex Millard (Kent, England), graduate student Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) and graduate student Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland). Millard, May, Flockhart and Mooney all finished in the top-10.  May, Millard and Flockhart ran the entire race together, which resulted in them finishing three, four and five.   Millard  was fourth (19:34.37), Flockhart was fifth (19:36.23) and Mooney was 10th (20:03.07). Senior Niamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland) was the final Friar to score as she placed 29th (20:37.90). 

Also expected to compete at the NCAA Championships will be senior Niamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland), junior Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland), and freshman Anna Gardiner (Downpatrick, Northern Ireland).
