Providence College Mourns The Loss Of Lisa Brown-Miller ’88

Former Friar standout and Olympic gold medalist Lisa Brown-Miller ’88, one of the most decorated players in program history, has passed away.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Lisa Brown-Miller '88, a trailblazer in women's ice hockey and one of the most accomplished athletes in Providence College history, passed away on Friday, May 2.
 
Originally from Union Lake, Michigan, Brown-Miller made an immediate impact on the Friar program, finishing her collegiate career with 92 goals, seventh on the Friar all-time list.  She also recorded 154 career points, ranking 13th in program history. As a freshman, she scored the game-winning goal against the University of New Hampshire to help Providence capture the ECAC Championship. In 1988, she was named ECAC Division I Player of the Year. Brown-Miller earned ECAC All-Star honors as a sophomore and senior.
 
After graduating from Providence, Brown-Miller played for the U.S. Women's National Team, including the historic 1998 squad that won Olympic gold. Over the course of six World Championship appearances (1990, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, and 1997), she totaled 13 goals and 25 assists in 30 games. She was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009 as a member of the 1998 Olympic team.  Brown-Miller also was inducted into the Providence College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008 as a member of the 1998 Olympic team.
 
Brown-Miller transitioned into coaching following her playing career, serving as head coach of the Princeton University women's ice hockey team from 1991–96. She compiled a 60-45-5 record, guiding the Tigers to Ivy League Championships in 1992 and 1995. She was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1992. After stepping away from coaching in 1996 to train full-time for the Olympics, she later returned to the bench as head coach at Aquinas College from 2019-2022.
