Men’s And Women’s Track Competes In Day 2 Of BIG EAST Track Championship

Kimberley May won the 5,000 meters and Pat Thygesen captured the steeplechase.
STORRS, Conn. – The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams traveled to Storrs Conn., for Day 2 of the BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championship on May 16. The competition is taking place at the Sherman Sports Complex at the University of Connecticut. Friar senior Kimberely May (Auckland, New Zealand) captured the 5,000 meters for the second consecutive year in a time of 15:50.04. Graduate student Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia) won the 3,000 meter steeplechase (8:46.72). It marked the second consecutive year that he captured the BIG EAST steeplechase.
In addition to May winning the 5,000 meters, freshman Anna Gardiner (Downpatrick, Northern Ireland) finished seventh (16:17.63) in the 5,000.
The Friar women had a strong day in the 1,500 preliminaries as five runners advanced to Saturday's finals. Graduate student Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) had the top time in the trials as she finished in 4:22.05. Freshman Annie Mann (Hampshire, England) (4:26.34), junior Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) (4:26.53), freshman Emily Bush (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) (4:26.70) and sophomore Kiera Hall (Christchurch, New Zealand) (4:26.99) all advanced to Saturday's finals.
In the 800 meters, sophomore Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland) ran a time of 2:09.43 to advance to Saturday's finals.
Freshman Chloe Higgins (Morristown, N.J.) completed the 400 meters preliminaries in a time of 55.49, which is the second fastest time in program history.
For the men's team, freshman Ryan LoCiero (Bloomfield, N.J.) was fifth in the steeplechase (9:13.15).
Freshman Cormac Dixon (Dublin, Ireland) was eighth in the 5,000 meters (14:35.02).
Sophomore Jon Mignacca (Seekonk, Mass.) was fifth in the high jump (1.95 meters).
Senior Brett Lehman (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) ran the 400 meter trials in a program record time of 46.85 to advance to the finals.
In the men's 400 meter hurdles, junior Will Rainey (San Jose, Calif.) ran a time of 57.03 in the preliminaries to advance the finals on Saturday.
In the 1,500 meters trials, sophomore Will Johnston (Auckland, New Zealand) finished in a time of 3:55.88 and junior Zane Powell (Auckland, New Zealand) ran 3:56.09 to advance to Saturday's finals.
