DENVER, COLO. – The No. 3 seed Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by No. 2 seed Villanova, 16-14, in the BIG EAST Semifinals on May 1 in Denver, Colo. Providence got out to an early 5-1 lead in the first quarter, but Villanova inched within one (8-7) at halftime. The Wildcats exploded for six unanswered goals in the third quarter and managed to hold on for the victory in a wild fourth quarter, during which Providence inch within one goal on two occasions. The Friars conclude their season with a 7-8 overall record, while the Wildcats (8-6) advance to the championship game vs. top-seeded Georgetown on Saturday.
1ST QUARTER:
•
Richie Joseph scored a pair of goals during a span of 29-seconds to give the Friars a 2-0 lead just 1:30 into the game.
• Joseph scored his third of the day at the 9:42 mark of the first for his sixth hat trick of the season.
• Villanova recorded its first goal of the evening at the 9:24 mark to make the score 3-1, but the Friars answered with back-to-back goals from
Jay Wilkerson (7:40) and
Chris Jaskiewicz (6:46). The tallies from Wilkerson and Jaskiewicz gave Providence a 5-1 advantage.
• The Wildcats outscored the Friars, 3-1, over the final 5:10 of the quarter to get within two (6-4).
• During that stretch,
Jack Horrigan tallied his first goal of the game and 42
nd of the season with 3:18 to play.
• The Friars' six goals in the opening 15 minutes of play marked the most allowed by Villanova in the first quarter during the 2025 season.
2ND QUARTER:
• Villanova cut the deficit to 6-5 just 50-seconds into the second quarter.
• Wilkerson halted the Wildcats' scoring run, with his second goal of the game (12
th of the season) at the 10:48 mark to give Providence a two-goal cushion (7-5).
• Villanova answered with 8:27 to play to cut the Friars' lead to a single-goal (7-6).
• Providence forced a turnover with under five minutes to play.
Albert Paniccia picked up the groundball and passed to
Dean Metzger on the clear. Metzger then converted his first goal of the season as he launched the ball from who midfield into an empty net (8-6).
• The Wildcats closed the quarter with a goal from Tyler Boes to make it 8-7 at halftime.
• Through the first half of play, both teams recorded 20 shots and 13 shots on goal. Providence held the edge in groundballs, 22-21. Villanova won 12 of 17 face-off opportunities in the opening 30 minutes of action.
3RD QUARTER:
• Villanova outscored the Friars 6-0 in the third quarter to claim a 13-8 lead. Two of the Wildcat's six goals were scored during man-up opportunities.
• Villanova outshot Providence 14-8 in the third (9-4 shots on goal).
4TH QUARTER:
•
Ryan Bell got the Friars back on the board for the first time since the 4:30 mark of the second quarter to make it a 13-9 game (13:33).
• Joseph found the back of the net just 1:04 later for his fourth goal of the game at the 12:29 mark. His goal helped the Friars inch within three (13-10).
• Bell connected on his second goal of the quarter (10:41), catching the Wildcat goaltender out of the net in the 10-man ride, to get the Friars within two (13-11).
• The Wildcats halted the Friars' three-goal scoring run with 9:39 on the clock (14-11).
• Providence capitalized, once again, on the 10-man ride by Villanova as
Sam Brazell scored from long distance on an empty net.

Quinn McConnaughey scored his first goal of the day just 12-seconds later, unassisted, off a face-off victory to draw Providence within one (14-13).
• Villanova extended its lead to 15-13 with 6:27 to play.
• The Friars found another open-net scoring opportunity on the Wildcat's 10-man ride as Horrigan found an open net at 5:12. He was assisted by Bell and Providence got back within one goal for a second time in the quarter (15-14).
• Providence forced a turnover with 1:25 to play in the game and Wilkerson's shot attempt on the offensive end to tie the game was stopped by Denis Fargione with 41-seconds remaining.
• The Wildcats picked up the ground ball and were able score with 18-seconds left to put the game out of reach (16-14).
NOTES:
• Villanova outscored Providence 9-6 in the second half, including a 6-0 scoring edge in the third quarter, to come away with the 16-14 win.
• Joseph and Bell each recorded five points for Providence in the game. Joseph recorded four goals and one assist and Bell added two goals and three assists.
• Horrigan and Wilkerson also recorded multiple goals in the game, with two each.
• Bell finished his career at Providence as the program's career leader in points (236) and assists (168). He also finished in a tie for 21
st all-time in career goals (68).
• With his five points vs. Villanova, he tied the Friars' single-season points record (66); a record he set in 2024.
• Horrigan also closed an impressive career at Providence ranked 14
th all-time in scoring (140 points) and third all-time in goals scored (116). He led the Friars in goals this season (43) and finished second on the team in points (51). Both totals marked career highs.
• Joseph finished the year third on the team in goals (37) and third in points (48). Through three seasons at Providence, Joseph ranks 17
th in career points (122) and tied for 10
th in goals (90).
• Goalkeeper
Dan Donahue recorded 11 saves for Providence in the semifinal loss to Villanova.
• McConnaughey went 11-25 from the face-off 'X', picked up four groundballs and scored one goal.
• For the game, Villanova led in shots (41-40), shots on goals (27-26) and won 21 of 33 faceoffs.
• Villanova were 4-6 on the extra-man in the victory, while the Friars were held scoreless (0-4).
