Women’s Track Competes At NCAA First Round

Shannon Flockhart and Kimberley May advance to the 1,500-meter quarterfinals and Maeve O’Neill advances to 800-meter quarterfinals as all will run on Saturday.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Providence College Friars competed in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field East Preliminary competition on Thursday, May 29 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.
Senior Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand), graduate student Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England), junior Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland), and freshman Annie Mann (Hampshire, England) all ran in the first round of the 1,500 meters. May ran the fastest 1,500 of the day when she crossed the line first in her heat in a time of 4:09.57. Flockhart also won her heat in a time of 4:14.81. Laverty (4:19.39) and Mann (4:20.0) placed 32nd and 33rd overall.
After today's first round of the 1,500 meters, May and Flockhart advance to the 1,500-meter quarterfinals, which will be run on Saturday at 5:15 p.m. A total of 24 athletes of the 47 that competed advanced (top five from each heat plus the next four fastest times) from Thursday's first round to Saturday's quarterfinals.
Sophomore Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland) competed in the 800 meters. O'Neill ran a school record time of 2:03.04 and finished fourth in her heat and 12th overall. O'Neill qualified for Saturday's quarterfinal race, which will be held at 7:05 p.m. A total of 26 of the 48 athletes who ran the event will advance to the quarterfinals.

The Friars will return to action on Friday when graduate student Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia) will run the 3,000-meter steeplechase quarterfinal at 5:40 p.m. Also scheduled to compete for the Friars is graduate student Alex Millard (Kent, England), who will toe the line in the 5,000 meters on Saturday at 8:10 p.m.
