How will these changes affect Friar Athletics?
Dear Friar Fans,
Â
This past Friday, the landmark House v. NCAA settlement was given final approval by U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken of the Northern District of California and paves the way for a new operating framework within college athletics. This agreement concludes more than five years of litigation and is effective starting on July 1, 2025. The four main areas of the settlement are:Â
Â
As I have shared with you in the past, Providence College has been preparing for over a year for this outcome, and we are well positioned to lead and operate in this new space. The support of our administration led by College President Rev. Kenneth Sicard, O.P., our Board of Trustees, my Cabinet colleagues, and all of you has been steadfast through these challenging times. This past offseason, our men's basketball, women's basketball, and men's ice hockey teams were strategic and had a clear vision in their approach to building a roster to compete at the highest level this coming season. Our commitment has not wavered during this time and our goal is always to compete for Big East, Hockey East, and NCAA championships.
Â
To remain competitive in this new landscape, it will require significant resources both internally and externally and difficult decisions may be required to compete within this new collegiate model. Your support is critical to our success and below are ways where you can participate:
Â
I will be sure to continue to keep you informed with any pertinent information as we navigate this new era of college athletics together. We are grateful for your generosity and support and appreciate all that you do to help make Friartown the special place that it is.

This agreement concludes more than five years of litigation and is effective starting on July 1, 2025. The four main areas of the settlement are:Â
Â
- Approval for institutions to directly share revenue with student-athletes
- Setting new roster limits guidelines for sports with some increasing and others decreasing
- Third-Party NIL agreements over $600 in value will be evaluated by a new national clearinghouse for fair market value assessment
- Payment of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) back damages for student-athletes from 2016 to 2024

To remain competitive in this new landscape, it will require significant resources both internally and externally and difficult decisions may be required to compete within this new collegiate model. Your support is critical to our success and below are ways where you can participate:
Â
- Direct Revenue Share Support: Make a tax-deductible contribution directly to Providence College that can be designated to revenue sharing. Please click here and indicate that you want to support revenue share in the designation box.
- Friar Family Collective: Our Collective remains open and is a critical partner in this new era of athletics. Please click here to sign up for upcoming golf tournaments, to learn about sponsorship or NIL opportunities, or to contribute.
- Purchase Season Tickets: We need all fans and students to fill the stands and give Friartown the biggest home court advantage in the nation. For single game or season ticket information please click here or call (401) 865-GOPC.Â
- Support all Olympic Sports: While direct institutional revenue share will focus on men's and women's basketball, men's ice hockey, and cross country and track, all of our Olympic sports can benefit from your philanthropic support. Contributions can be given directly to varsity athletics to support your program of choice by clicking here or you may visit the Opendorse Marketplace to support a sport or student athlete of your choice.
I will be sure to continue to keep you informed with any pertinent information as we navigate this new era of college athletics together. We are grateful for your generosity and support and appreciate all that you do to help make Friartown the special place that it is.
