Women's Hoops Holds Off St. John's, 72-67

JAMAICA, N.Y - Providence defeated host St. John's, 72-67, in a BIG EAST match-up. Trailing by as many as 18 points in the second half, St. John's went on a run to tie the game (67-67) with 1:43 left on a free throw by Cristina Jorif. Chrissy Vozab hit a three-pointer to give the Lady Friars a 70-67 lead, then teammate Jen Gombotz made a layup to seal the victory for Providence. Meghan Hinds led the Lady Friars with 28 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Gombotz recorded 22 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Giani Bowles' 19 points and five assists led St. John's, while teammate Latasha Thompson recorded 18 points and a team-high two steals. Aiysha Smith chipped in with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds, while teammate Tanya Mrdjen scored six points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Red Storm.

St. John's (6-10, 1-5 BIG EAST) will next travel to Georgetown on January 22 for a BIG EAST matchup. Providence (9-6, 4-2 BIG EAST) will host Boston College on January 22 at 7:00 pm.
