WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross' Jeanette Paukert scored a game-high 27 points as the Crusaders defeated Providence College, 67-66, on Wednesday night. A last second shot by PC's Chrissy Vozab fell just short as the Friars dropped to 9-8 on the season. Holy Cross improved to 13-6.
In a game that saw 11 lead changes, the Friars fought back from an eight point deficit in the second half to take the lead, 63-62, with 2:16 remaining in the ball game. HC's Katie O'Keefe (14 points) then scored four of the Crusader's final five points - two on layup and the others on free throws - to secure the win. With Holy Cross leading, 67-63, with 0:34 left, Providence's Monika Roberts converted on a three point play the old-fashioned way to pull the Friars to within one, 66-67. With four ticks left on the clock the Friars in bounded the ball under their own hoop, drove the length of the floor in time to get off a last second three that just missed.
Meghan Hinds led PC with 14 points followed by Steffanie Shoop's 12 points. Both teams get back into league play this Saturday as Providence host St. John's and Holy Cross squares off against Army.
