MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated in the 2000 Sheraton Four Points Basketball Classic championship game on Sunday, November 19th by the host school, University of Minnesota, 88-60.

The Friars (1-1 overall), never led in the game and were forced by the Golden Gophers (2-0) to play catch-up the entire contest.

Senior Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.) led the Friars with 14 points in the defeat. She recorded her first double-double of the season, pulling in a game-high 11 rebounds and adding two steals and two blocked shots in 30 minutes.

Freshman center Jenese Wilcox (Port Chester, N.Y.) was the only other Friar to score in double-figures as the 6'2" rookie notched a career-high 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Minnesota led by 20 points at the half-time break, 45-20, and forced the Friars into 26% shooting (5-34) in the game's first 20 minutes. The Gophers outscored Providence in the second half, 43-35, and help the Friars to 21% shooting (15-72) in the contest.

Minnesota was led by tournament MVP Lindsay Whalen, who scored 27 points.

Gombotz and Wilcox were both named to the all-tournament team, representing tournament runner-up Providence.

The Friars return to action on Friday, November 24th, when they face the University of Pacific at Santa Clara University. Game time is 11:00 p.m. est.
