Providence, R.I....... The Providence College Friars finished 13th at the 1999-00 Big East Swimming and Diving Championships, held at the Goodwill Games Pool, in East Meadow, N.Y., on February 17-19. Pittsburgh captured the men's title, while Notre Dame claimed the women's title.
With all of the current Friars competing as non-scholarship athletes, the squad found themselves over matched from the beginning. The Big East Conference consists of numerous fully-funded swim programs that have the ability to dominate.
Seniors Kevin Reeder (Southbury, Conn.), Karen Cardwell (Marietta, Ga.), Joe Gesker (Herdnon, Va.) and Meghan Robinson (Plano, Texas) paced the Friars, as all 10 of the team's relays placed, while recording their best times of the year.
The squad was also able to turn in some great individual performances, as only five of 97 Providence swimmers failed to produce a season's best time, in their individual events.
Overall, Coach O'Neill was pleased with his team's performance and the fact that 95% of his swimmers were able to produce their best times of the season at the Big East Championships
