PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars defeated UMass-Lowell, 2-1, in HOCKEY EAST action on Saturday, February 26 at PC's Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.
PC's Heath Gordon netted the first goal of the game at 17:37 of the first period. Jon DiSalvatore sent a pass to Gordon who one-timed a shot past UMass-Lowell netminder Jimi St.John to give the Friars a 1-0 lead.
The Friars increased their lead in the second period when Peter Fregoe picked up a rebound and fired it past St.John on a power-play at the 14:11 mark.
Josh Allison registered UMass' only goal of the game when he blasted a slap shot from outside the blueline that eluded Friar netminder Boyd Ballard in a short-handed situation at 12:56 of the third. The River Hawks carried most of the play in third period, forcing Ballard to make 19 stops in the final 20 minutes.
Ballard played strong in net for PC, tying his season high in saves with 40. St.John registered 24 stops for UMass-Lowell.
With the win, Providence improved to 18-15-1 overall and in 10-12 HOCKEY EAST. With the loss, UMass-Lowell fell to 8-22-3 overall and 4-16-3 in league action.
Providence College will return to action on Friday, March 3 against HOCKEY EAST foe Maine at PC's Arena at 7:00 p.m.
