Providence, R.I. - The 10th-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights got 50 points from their starting backcourt trio and won the battle of the boards as they defeated the Providence College Friars, 81-68, at PC's Alumni Hall on Wednesday night.

Junior Karlita Washington led all scorers with 20 points while senior standout Shawnetta Stewart added 16 points and senior Usha Gilmore added 14 to pace the Rutgers' attack. Junior center Tammy Sutton-Brown rounded out the double figure scorers with ten points on the night.

Providence had four double figure scorers of their own led by senior Meghan Hinds with 17. Junior center Monika Roberts added 13 while sophomore guard Chrissy Vozab scored 10 as did junior Dani Trippany who came off the bench to add 10.

Rutgers outrebounded the Friars on the night by a 46-35 margin. Scarlet Knight sophomore forward Davalyn Cunningham grabbed eight boards as did Stewart to lead all rebounders. PC's top rebounder was Roberts with six on the evening.

After Rutgers jumped out to a 12-2 lead at the 15:35 mark of the first half, PC chipped away at the lead. A pair of Hinds' three-pointers brought the Friars to within one at 22-12 with 4:40 left in the first half. From there, Rutgers went on a 14-2 run over the final 4:40 to open a 36-23 halftime lead.

In the second half, Rutgers built its lead to as many as 22, at 58-36, with 11:16 left in the game. PC would get as close as nine points three separate times late in the half, but the Scarlet Knights made their final eight free throws to hold on for the final of 81-68.

The loss drops Providence to 9-12 overall and 4-7 in BIG EAST play. Rutgers improves to 16-4 on the season with an 8-2 mark in the league.

PC returns to action on Saturday, February 12th with a 2:00 p.m. home game at Alumni Hall versus the University of Miami.
