In his fourth season with the field hockey team, Head Coach Bill Davidson is hoping to continue from where the team left off last season. Although the Friars struggled through the 2000 season in the win/loss category of a highly competitive schedule, they earned a third place ranking in the BIG EAST. The team went on to defeat second-seeded Rutgers in the Semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament and lost to eventual BIG EAST Champion, UConn, in the Finals to secure a second-place Tournament finish.

Coach Davidson believes the key to a successful season will include strong goaltending, "power-hockey" using the fundamentals as a backbone, and an aggressive style of play with emphasis on taking risks and creating as well as capitalizing on scoring opportunities.

In 2001, the Friars return 16 letterwinners, including three seniors, and welcomes six talented newcomers, who will combine to continue the very evident momentum the team achieved at the end of the season.

The Friars will be looking for this year's senior co-captain combination of Katie Willett (Biddeford, Maine) and Kara Lukens (Pennsburg, Pa.) to use their experience and tremendous leadership to guide the team to a repeat appearance in the BIG EAST tournament. As defenders, they will stabilize the backfield play and add strong support to attacking opportunities.

Fellow senior, Maggie Hoffmann (Southbury, Conn.) made great strides in the spring 2000 and will be called on to lead the attack. With increased confidence and poise she will be able to create scoring opportunities and finish strong in front of the net.

An obstacle for the Friars is having so many talented forwards and only so many positions for them. In order to rectify this, returning players Jen Chin (Norwood, Mass.), Courtney Dow (Hampstead, N.Y.), and Casey Geary (Norwood, Mass.) will need to be ready to take on the role of forward or midfielder in any given situation.

Lyndsey Brooks (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Stefanie Suehnholz (Flemington, N.J.) have been very successful in the midfield for the Friars. They will be key components in the transitional game, and will lend their experience to any newcomers who may join the midfield this season.

Firming up the midfield/forward lines will be Kelly Piwinski (Seabrook, N.H.), Maura Desfosses (Plymouth, N.H.), Becky Drake (Bellingham, Mass.), and Kelly Romanowicz (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Each of these players will add to the depth of these two lines.

On defense, veteran Katie Kelly (Weston, Mass.) will join the co-captains with her leadership and experience. Kelly will guide players such as Kim Bradbury (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Elizabeth Nolan (North Easton, Mass.) to solidify the Friar defense.

Goaltending will be a pivotal position for the Friars this season. The Friar coaching staff will work with the young talents of sophomore Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) and freshman Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) to fill this role. Moran saw action in three regular-season games last fall. During the Spring Moran had the individual attention of Coach Herr to build confidence in her skills and help her to become a more dominant force in the circle.

The Friars complete their 2001 roster with six talented newcomers, including Jones, who are eager to showcase their skills: Sarah Dagrosa (Haddon Heights, N.J.), Melissa Kroslak (Hopkinton, Mass.), Karaline Nolen (Blue Bell, Pa.), Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.), and Stephanie Wise (South Burlington, Vt.).
