PROVIDENCE COLLEGE HOCKEY NOTES (4-5-0 OVERALL/3-3-0 HOCKEY EAST)
LAST WEEK: The Friars split a pair of contests with Northeastern, losing, 3-1, at Schneider Arena on Friday and winning, 5-3, at Matthews on Saturday. Junior Doug Wright (Kamsack, Sask.) scored for PC on Friday while sophomore defenseman Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) and Jon DiSalvatore (South Windsor, Conn.) scored on Saturday.
SCHAEFER SOLID IN GOAL: Junior goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) stopped a total of 74 shots this weekend in a split with Northeastern. Sheafer made a career-high 44 saves in Friday night's 3-1 loss to Northeastern and made 30 saves on Saturday in the 5-3 victory. Schaefer also contributed his second assist of the season when he assisted, with Chris Chaput, on DiSalvatore's empty net goal. On the weekend, Schaefer stopped 74 of 79 shots, posting a 0.937 save percentage, a 2.50 goals against average and 120 minutes. Schaefer also picked up his first victory of the season away from PC's Schneider Arena. Schaefer has started all nine contests in goal this season, posting a 3.10 goals against average, a .904 save percentage and a 4-5-0 record. Schaefer has logged 541:07 minutes this season of a possible 544:05. Schaefer has played all but 2:58, when he left the net against Michigan, UMass Lowell, UMass Amherst and Northeastern for an extra attacker. Last season, Schaefer earned All-American and Second Team All-HOCKEY EAST honors, posting a 15-8-2 record, a 2.47 goals against average and a .915 save percentage.
FOUR SCORES AND SEVEN YEARS AGO ...: PC's Jon DiSalvatore became the most recent Friars to score four goals in a game when he did so on Saturday, November 10 at Northeastern. The last time a PC player scored four goals in a game was on December 10, 1994 against Northeastern when Dennis Burke scored four goals in a 10-3 win by Providence. DiSalvatore scored his goals on the power play, shorthanded, even strength and and empty netter.
SPECIAL TEAMS: The Friars scored their sixth power-play goal of the season on Saturday when Jon DiSalvatore tallied on a blast from the top of the slot. The Friars have now converted on six-of-51 (0.118) man-advantage tries. PC's opponents have scored eight power play goals and the Friars have foiled 47-of-55 (0.855) of their opponents power-play chances. The Friars are led by senior Peter Fregoe (2 pp goals), junior Devin Rask (2 pp goals) and Jon DiSalvatore (1 pp goal) while DiSalvatore has scored two shorthanded goals, and Rask and Drew Omicioli have one shorthanded goal each.
PROVIDENCE-BOSTON COLLEGE SERIES: The Friars and Eagles have met a total of 127 times with BC leading the series, 81-39-7. The Friars and Eagles last met on March 17 in the HOCKEY EAST Championship game at FleetCenter, where BC won, 5-3. Providence has won just one of the last six meetings. In games in Providence, BC leads, 32-21-5, while they also lead the games played in Boston, 47-15-2.
PROVIDENCE-NEW HAMPSHIRE SERIES: The Friars and Wildcats have met a total of 106 times with UNH leading the series, 52-44-10. In games played in Providence, the Friars lead, 27-18-6, while games in New Hampshire, UNH leads, 31-17-4.
FRIARS HISTORY IN THE HOCKEY EAST: The Friars have an all-time record of 182-210-44 (0.468) in HOCKEY EAST league competition. Last year the Friars had their best record in HOCKEY EAST play since the inaugural 1984-85 season when PC went 15-14-5 and won the HOCKEY EAST Championship. Last year, PC went 13-8-3 and finished tied for second in the regular season - Providence's highest finish in league play ever. This season, PC is 3-3-0 in HOCKEY EAST games, with wins this season against UMass Amherst, Merrimack and Northeastern. The Friars lost three league games, at UMass Lowell, against UMass Amherst and Northeastern.
