Villanova University Wildcats (8-8/3-1): The Wildcats come to Hendricken Field for a critical BIG EAST game on Sunday, October 27. Both Villanova and Providence are looking to qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament that takes place in Syracuse, N.Y. on November 8 and 10. This game will conclude the regular season schedule for the Wildcats and a victory will put them into the BIG EAST Tournament. Villanova has won its last three BIG EAST contests after dropping its BIG EAST opener against Connecticut (2-1). The Wildcats have been led offensively by junior forwards Leah Lisausky (Morrisville, Pa.) and Christina Lugones (Oceanport, N.J.), who share the team lead in points with 19. Nine of Lugones' points have come in BIG EAST play, which leads the league. Lisausky leads the team in goals with eight, while Lugones and sophomore back Vanessa Pizzulli (Oceanport, N.J.) share the team lead in assists with seven. Starting 15 of the Wildcats' 16 games this season in goal has been senior Meghan Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.). On the season, she has compiled a 1.91 goals against average, a .771 save percentage, and two shutouts. Last season, the Wildcats hosted Providence, and defeated the Friars, 4-2. Villanova has won the last three matchups with Providence, dating back to the 1999 season.
Providence College Friars (8-10/1-2): The Providence College field hockey team is looking to extend their perfect record at home (4-0) as they battle BIG EAST foe Villanova. This game should go a long way in deciding whether or not the Friars will qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament. In its last two games, Providence was defeated at Boston College (2-1) and Brown (3-2 ps). As a team, Providence is second among BIG EAST teams with 32 goals this year. Supplying most of the Friar goals has been senior forward Jennifer Chin (Norwood, Mass.), senior midfield Kara Lukens (Pennsburg, Pa.), and junior forward Kelly Romanowicz (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Chin leads the team with eight goals while Lukens and Romanowicz share second place on the team with four goals each. In BIG EAST games, sophomore forward Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) has provided the most offense as she has the team lead in goals (two) and points (four). Starting all 18 games this season in goal for Providence has been junior Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.). On the season, she has compiled a 1.53 goals against average, a .728 save percentage, and two shutouts. The Friars have won all four of their games at home this season. This streak is the longest since the 1993 season, when Providence won five consecutive home games. The Wildcats have played at Providence nine times, with the Friars owning a 6-1-2 record against Villanova.
