SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Syracuse, 66-58, in a BIG EAST Conference game on Wednesday night in Syracuse, N.Y. Junior guard Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) led four Friars in double figures with 14 points. The Orangewomen were led offensively by Shannon Perry, who poured in a game-high 18 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
The game was tied, 32-32, at halftime. Quinn and senior guard Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) led the Friars in the half with nine points each. Syracuse was led offensively in the first half by Julie McBride and Rochelle Coleman, who also scored nine points apiece. Providence shot 45.8 percent (11-24) from the field in the opening period, including 50.0 percent (4-8) from beyond the three-point arc. PC also connected on six-of-six free-throw attempts. Syracuse shot 65.0 percent (13-20) from the field in the first half, including 66.7 percent (4-6) from three-point territory. The Orangewomen suffered from the foul line, connecting on just two-of-10 attempts.
In the second half, the Friars were outscored, 34-26. PC shot a dismal 27.3 percent from the floor as it connected on just six-of-22 field goal attempts. Providence missed all seven of its attempts from three-point territory in the second half, and missed seven free-throws in the half (14-21). The Orangewomen shot 40.0 percent (12-30) from the field in the second half, but were a mere one-for-12 from the three-point line (8.3 percent) and nine-of-20 from the foul line.
Joining Quinn in double figures for Providence were sophomore Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) and Freeburg with 11 points each. Sophomore Michal Epstein (Rehovot, Israel) added 10 points to the PC effort. Simmonds led the Friars on the boards with eight rebounds.
McBride finished the game with 16 points for Syracuse, followed by April Jean and Coleman, who scored 14 and 13 points, respectively. Jean added eight rebounds, while McBride added a game-high six assists.
Providence (9-15, 3-10 BIG EAST) returns to action against Miami in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, February 22 in Miami, Fla. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
