Diane Madl returns for her second season at Providence College as head coach of the Friar field hockey team. In 2003, the squad returns eleven letterwinners, including four members of the starting lineup, from a team that finished with an 8-12 overall record in 2002. Five of the Friars' losses a year ago came in overtime, including three contests which were decided in penalty strokes.
Though Providence lost seven members of the starting lineup to graduation, Madl boasts the addition of nine newcomers to the 2003 roster. These nine newcomers are two sophomores and seven freshman.
The top-returning players from last season include senior co-captain Kelly Romanowicz (Shrewsbury, Mass.), senior vice captains Stefanie Suehnholz (Flemington, N.J.) and Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.). Romanowicz finished second on the team in scoring in 2002 with 14 points on a career-high five goals and four assists. Suehnholz, a defender, earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors last season and scored six points on two goals and two assists. She also registered one defensive save. Moran returns for her final year as the team's goalkeeper. She has been a reliable starter for the Friars in two of her three seasons with the team. In 2002, Moran posted a 1.68 goals against average and a .730 save percentage in 1,420 minutes of action.
Romanowicz, Suehnholz and Moran will serve as the "catalysts for success" in the 2003 season, along with eight other returning players who have each earned a significant amount of experience under the direction of Madl. These players include seniors Maura Desfosses (Plymouth, N.H.) and Becky Drake (Bellingham, Mass.), juniors Sarah Dagrosa (Haddon Heights, N.J.), Melissa Kroslak (Hopkinton, Mass.), Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) and Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) and sophomores Katharine Lary (Canaan, N.H.) and Allison Klugman (Westborough, Mass.).
FORWARDS
Romanowicz will lead a youthful group on the forward line for Providence, as she returns for her final season. Joining her will be Desfosses, Phillips, Lary and three freshmen, Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.), Jessica Weinstein (Bridgeton, N.J.) and Colleen Walsh (South Easton, Mass.). Sophomore Laura Smith (Osterville, Mass.) also will add depth to the Friars' forward line during her first season of collegiate field hockey.
Desfosses played eight games in 2002 and scored two points on one goal. The goal marked the first of her collegiate career and was recorded on September 8 in a 4-1 win over Sacred Heart. Phillips, who played 20 games with nine appearances in the starting lineup, finished fifth on the team in scoring last year with six points on three goals. Two of her three goals were scored in games versus BIG EAST opponents. Lary appeared in nine games as a freshman and gained valuable experience. She will play a critical role in PC's offensive corners in 2003. McGow was a Regional High School All-American and two-time, First-Team All-State and All-Conference selection at Branford High School (Conn.). She set a school record at Branford for career goals (78) and goals in a single-season (39) in 2002. During her high school career, McGow helped Branford to a 65-5-6 overall record and two Class M State Championships in 2001 and 2002. Weinstein has been a member of the Futures program since 1998 and played scholastically at Cumberland Regional (N.J.). She was a First-Team All-Conference selection in 2002 and earned Second-Team honors in 2000 and 2001. She led her team to three Tri-County and Royal Division Championships in her tenure and a State Championship in 2000. Each of the members of the forward line also are capable of making the transition to the midfield if needed. Walsh was a two-time Hockomock League and All-Scholastic All-Star at Oliver Ames High School (Mass.).
Kroslak, will play primarily as a midfielder, also will see some time at forward. Kroslak played 20 games for PC in 2002 and made two appearances as a starter.
MIDFIELD
Joining Kroslak in the midfield will be Suehnholz, freshman Genevieve LaPaglia (Upper Montclair, N.J.) and a substantial mix of talent from the forward line, including Romanowicz, Desfosses, Phillips, Lary, McGow and Weinstein.
Kroslak, though listed as a forward, will see the majority of her time in the midfield. Suehnholz, a Second-Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2002 as a defender, will likely move her way into the midfield for her final season with the Friars. Suehnholz brings great experience to the field and will be looked upon to provide steady leadership. She has played in 61 games during her career and has appeared in the starting lineup 59 times. As a defender, she has recorded 21 career points on seven goals and seven assists. Suehnholz will continue to play a critical role in both offensive and defensive corners for PC in 2003. Suehnholz also will see action as a defender.
LaPaglia, who also will see time in the defensive unit as well, comes to Providence for her first year of collegiate field hockey after playing four years at the Oak Knoll School (N.J.). While at Oak Knoll, LaPaglia earned All-County, All-Prep and Honorable Mention All-State honors.
Another freshman, Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.) will add considerable depth to the Friar midfield, but will primarily be used as a defender. Ewens was a First-Team North Shore Field Hockey League selection and Honorable Mention Athlete of the Year at her Argyle Secondary School (Vancouver, B.C.). Ewens was recently selected to play on the British Columbia Provincial Under-18 Team.
DEFENSE
Joining Suehnholz, LaPaglia and Ewens in defensive unit will be senior Becky Drake (Bellingham, Mass.), junior Sarah Dagrosa (Haddon Heights, N.J.), sophomores Allison Klugman (Westborough, Mass.) and Kristen Baraiola (Wallingford, Mass.) and freshmen Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) and Noel Mahlstadt (Farmingville, N.Y.).
Drake has battled injury throughout her collegiate career and hopes to become a major contributor on the field in her final season. Drake possesses excellent work ethic and played three games as a junior. Dagrosa appeared in nine games as a sophomore in 2002 and registered her first collegiate goal in a 5-2 victory over Pacific on October 13, 2003. Klugman, a very skilled defender, battled injuries during her freshman campaign and appeared in five games. She has the ability to make solid contributions in the lineup. Baraiola joins the Friars for her first year of collegiate field hockey and will add depth to the defense.
Sickel comes to Providence after a very successful high school career at Timberlane High (N.H.), where she twice earned First-Team All-State recognition and Team Most Valuable Player honors (2001, 2002). She has been involved with Futures since 1997, participated in the National Futures Tournament (2002, 2003) and has played for the Futures Elite program. Sickel helped Timberlane to the Class L State Finals in 2001 and 2002. Mahlstadt, a two-time All-Division and All-Conference selection at Sachem High School (N.Y.) rounds out the Friar defense. She also earned All-County Honorable Mention honors and was selected as her team's Most Valuable Player in 2002.
GOALKEEPERS
Moran, a vice captain in 2003, will once again take on the duties in goal for the Friars as a senior. Joining Moran in the cage will be junior Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.). In 2003, Jones played in five games for a total of 77 minutes. She allowed just one goal and made five saves for a 0.91 goals against average and a .833 save percentage. Jones has been a reliable back-up for the Friars, allowing just one goal in seven games during her career at PC. She will look to gain more playing experience in 2003.
WRAP-UP
In 2003, the Friars will look to combine nine new faces with a group of 11 returning players to form a single unit filled with skill, speed, power and poise. The key to PC's success in 2003 will be how quickly the newcomers adjust to Coach Madl's system. Coach Madl expects substantial contributions from her veteran players, while she is hopeful that the nine new faces on her squad will add the key ingredients, offensively and defensively, to help the Friars improve on their 8-12 overall finish of a year ago.
