Women's Basketball Falls To #25 Virginia Tech, 77-56

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to #25 Virginia Tech, 77-56, during BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, February 21 in Providence, R.I. Virginia Tech improves to 19-6 overall and 8-6 in the BIG EAST, while the Friars fall to 4-20 (0-13 BIG EAST) on the season.
PC junior Gayle Nwafili (Maplewood, N.J.) led all scorers and rebounders with a career-high 27 points and 16 rebounds. She also matched a career high with five blocked shots and dished out three assists. Her effort marked the seventh double-double of the season and the third time she has reached the 20-point mark in a single game. The Hokies had three players in double figures led by Ieva Kublina (19 points). Carrie Mason and Erin Gibson contributed 10 points each in the win.
In the first half, the Friars trailed, 17-14, with 10:29 showing on the clock, but the Hokies closed out the half with a 24-10 scoring run that gave Virginia Tech a 41-24 lead at the break. Kublina and Mason each reached double figures in the opening 20 minutes with 13 points and 10 points, respectively. Nwafili had nine points and six boards at halftime.
Virginia Tech opened the second half on a 15-7 run to take a 56-31 lead during the first 6:40 of play. The Friars would cut the lead to 20 (61-41) with 8:36 remaining in the game, but would get no closer. The Hokies held their largest lead of the game, 76-49 (27 points), with 2:08 remaining. Over the last two minutes of action PC outscored Virginia Tech, 7-3.
Providence College will travel to Storrs, Conn. on Wednesday, February 25 to take on #2/1 UConn. The game will be played at Gampel Pavillion and is scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
