Swimming and Diving Loses At Maine

ORONO, Maine - The Providence College women's swimming and diving team won five events but lost at Maine, 177-119, in a swim meet held Sunday afternoon at Wallace Pool. The PC men's swimming and diving team won four events, but also lost to the Black Bears, 170-123.
On the men's side, Providence captured four events. Leading the way was junior captain Frank LaMonaca (Cheshire, Conn.) who won the 100-yard freestyle (50.22), finished second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.50) and 50-yard freestyle (23.56), and finished off the meet by swimming the anchor-leg of the first-place 400-yard freestyle relay squad (3:23.09).
Junior captain Nick Taylor (Devonshire, Bermuda) won the 1000-yard freestyle with a first-place time of 10:28.96, while junior Seth Brockman (Kenner, La.) won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.89. Additionally, Taylor, freshman Ryan Barnicle (Newington, Conn.), and senior Matt Raske (New Rochelle, N.Y.) helped PC win the 400-yard freestyle relay.
On the women's side, sophomore Annie Nemeth (Kendall, N.Y.) won a pair of events including the 100-yard breaststroke. Her first-place time of 1:10.43 narrowly edged out the second-place finisher by 0.10 seconds. Nemeth also won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:27.18, and placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.79. Sophomore Katelyn Flynn (Sinking Spring, Pa.) won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:18.72. She also placed second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.74, and second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:21.58. Sophomore Carolyn Rider (Freehold, N.J.) won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:19.47. The women's 400-yard freestyle relay team also posted an impressive victory with a 3:57.95 showing. The relay consisted of Rider, junior Lori Brezinsky (Bethleham, Pa.), senior Alyssa Meleski (Southington, Conn.) and freshman Jessica McCarthy (Woodstock, N.Y.).
Providence men's and women's swimming & diving teams each return to action at home against UMass-Dartmouth this Saturday, January 22, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
