Field Hockey BIG EAST Game Preview

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (6-11, 1-2 BIG EAST): The Providence College field hockey team will face Villanova in BIG EAST action on Sunday, October 23. The game will be played at Villanova Stadium in Villanova, Pa., and is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. The Friars enter Sunday's game with a 6-11 overall record and a 1-2 mark in the BIG EAST. PC is coming off a 4-3 victory against cross-town rival Brown on October 19. Junior Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.) netted two goals to lead the Friars. Sophomore Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) scored the game-winner with no time left in regulation during a penalty corner, and added an assist. Junior Jessica Weinstein (Bridgeton, N.J.) also scored for Providence.

Through 17 games, Maguire leads the offense with 22 points on nine goals and four assists. She has reached single-season career highs in points, goals and assists in her second year with the Friars. As a freshman in 2004, Maguire notched 13 points on six goals and one assist. McGow is second among her teammates in scoring with 18 points on four goals and 10 assists. McGow tallied one assist in the victory against Brown on October 16 and moved into a tie for eighth place on Providence's all-time scoring list. For her career, McGow has 76 points on 24 goals and 27 assists. She also ranks sixth all-time in career assists, and sits at 12th all-time in career goals. Ewens and senior Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.) are tied for third on the team in scoring with 16 points apiece. Ewens has recorded a career-best eight goals this season, while Lary has six goals and four assists. Ewens recorded the first multiple-goal game of her career against Brown on October 16 with two goals. Lary is steadily creeping up the all-time scoring list at Providence and currently ranks 13th all-time in scoring with 64 points on 22 goals and 20 assists. McGow and Lary are two of just 10 players in Providence College field hockey history to have recorded over 20 goals and 20 assists in their careers.

Freshman Stephanie Scavelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) has played 1,194 minutes in goal this season for PC. She has a 0.687 save percentage and a 2.70 goals against average.

Seven of the Friars' 11 losses this season have been decided by one goal, including two losses in overtime. Four losses have come at the hands of teams who have been ranked in the top-20 of the national coaches' poll. Villanova is currently ranked 17th nationally and holds a 13-4 overall record (3-1 BIG EAST).

Last season, Providence defeated Villanova, 5-0, on October 24 at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. The Friars are 1-2 versus the Wildcats under the direction of fourth-year head coach Diane Madl. Prior to last season's win over Villanova, the Friars had not beaten the Wildcats since 1998.

VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY (13-4, 3-1 BIG EAST): Villanova enters Sunday's game with a 13-4 overall record and a 3-1 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. The Wildcats only loss in league play came at the hands of Syracuse (4-3) on October 8 in Syracuse, N.Y. Sunday's game marks the final regular-season contest for Villanova. The Wildcats are coming off back-to-back victories, including an impressive, 6-5, double-overtime win against league foe Louisville, who was ranked 13th in the nation at the time of the game. Villanova battled back from a 4-0 halftime deficit to earn the win.

Through 17 games, Villanova is led offensively by two players who have eclipsed the 40-point plateau. Megan Foster leads the Wildcats with 43 points on 18 goals and seven assists. Rory Rogers is second on the team in scoring with 42 points on 17 goals and eight assists. Lauren Campaneli and Sara Schmidt have recorded 24 points and 21 points, respectively. Schmidt leads the team with 11 assists.

Erin Scott has played 707 minutes in goal for Villanova this season and has posted an 8-3 record. She has a 0.705 save percentage and a 2.57 goals against average. Alex Whalen has played 395 minutes in the cage and has posted a 5-1 record. Whalen has a 0.652 save percentage and a 1.42 goals against average.
