Providence Swimming Defeats Fairfield, Falls to Loyola

Fairfield, Conn. - The Providence men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their seasons with a tri-meet with Fairfield and Loyola on Friday afternoon and both the Providence men's and women's teams defeated the Stags, but fell to the Greyhounds. The Providence men defeated Fairfield, 104-34, but fell to Loyola, 71-50. On the women's side, the Friars downed Fairfield, 88.5-51.5, but lost to Loyola, 82-56.

Individual winners on the women's side included senior Katelyn Flynn, who won three events. Flynn finished first in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:07.84 and raced to victory in the 200 butterfly in 2:27.84. She also captured the 200 individual medley in 2:29.43. Senior Annie Nemeth also had a strong showing for the Friars, finishing first in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:16.88 and winning the 200 breaststroke in time of 2:46.42. She was second to Flynn in the 200 IM in 2:32: 61.

On the men's side, freshman Tim Reilly had an outstanding collegiate debut, winning three races. He was first in both the 100 backstroke (1:02.83) and 200 backstroke (2:14.79) and also won the 200 IM (2:18.54). Also winning for PC was freshman Mike Loftis, who took first in the 200 freestyle in 2:01.22. The Providence men also captured the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:46.36. That quartet included Loftis, Ryan Clark, Nick Trilla and Justin Rich.

Providence will return to action on Wednesday, October 25, when it hosts Bryant University.
