Friar Women's Basketball Defeats Brown, 62-53

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Brown, 62-53, in a cross-city match-up at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. on Sunday, November 12. Senior Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) led all scorers with 18 points. Sophomore Shantee Darrian (Trenton, N.J.) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds in the win.
Providence jumped out to an 18-0 lead over the course of the first 8:27. Brown scored its first basket of the game to make the score, 18-2, with 11:33 showing on the clock. Brown closed out the half with a 20-15 scoring advantage and Providence went into the half with a 33-22 lead. Snyder led all scorers in the opening 20 minutes with 10 points. Darrian grabbed a team-high seven boards in the first half, including three off the offensive glass. Lena McAfee led Brown offensively in the first half with eight points, while Ashley King-Bischof pulled down a team-best six rebounds.
In the second half, Brown outscored Providence 31-29, but could not overcome its first half deficit. With 8:53 to play in the game, Lena McAfee nailed a three-pointer to get within five (45-40). It proved to be as close as Brown would get the rest of the way, as Providence finished the game with a 17-13 scoring advantage to make the final, 62-53.
Sophomore Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) finished the game with 14 points for Providence, and added four rebounds and a game-high five steals.
King-Bischof posted a double-double on 11 points and 11 rebounds. McAfee added 11 points and seven rebounds, while Megan McCahill recorded 10 points, five rebounds and a game-high four assists.
Providence (2-0) will return to action on Wednesday, November 15 against Saint Peter's at 7:00 p.m. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I.
