BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Providence College field hockey team scored four second-half goals en route to a 5-4 victory over Vermont on Monday, August 28 at Moulton Winder Field in Burlington, Vt. Senior Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.) scored the game-winning goal with 4:09 remaining in the contest. Ewens' goal was assisted by senior Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.). Five different Friars were credited a goal in the game. Senior Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) tallied a team-high four points on one goal and two assists.
Providence got on the scoreboard just under 10 minutes into the game as freshman Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) found the back of the cage, unassisted, for a 1-0 lead. Vermont scored two unanswered goals to end the first half with a 2-1 advantage. Kelly McClintock scored at the 15:24 mark off a feed from Maegan Luce. Nikki Desch put UVM ahead (2-1) at the 30:35 mark off an assist from Megan Maynard.
Vermont took a 3-1 lead just 6:48 into the second half as McClintock recorded her second goal of the afternoon. Danielle Collins was credited with the assist. Providence regrouped and rallied to score back-to-back goals to tie the game, 3-3. McGow struck first off an assist from Poulin at 42:30. Freshman Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.) scored the equalizer off a feed from McGow just minutes later at the 46:19 mark.
The Catamounts struck again to take a 4-3 lead in the 56th minute of play as Desch connected on her second goal of the game. Betsy Welsh earned the assist on the play. Just one minute and seven second later, PC tied the game, 4-4, as Sickel blasted a shot into the back of the cage off of a direct shot during a corner. Ewens and McGow each were credited with an assist. Providence then earned the victory as Ewens scored her first goal of the season off of a Sickel assist with 4:09 to play.
Providence out-shot Vermont, 21-15. Fourteen of PC's 21 shots were on goal, while Vermont managed to get six shots on goal. Each team earned six corners in the contest. Freshman Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) improves to 2-0 for the Friars in the cage. She finished the day with two saves. Erin Hickey took the loss for Vermont. She recorded nine stops in the game.
Providence (2-0) will return to action on Sunday, September 3 against Michigan at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. The Wolverines are ranked No. 8 in the STX/NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll. The game is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
