PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated 8th-ranked Michigan, 2-1, on Sunday, September 3 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. With the victory, the Friars improve to 3-0 on the season, while Michigan drops to 0-4 overall. Prior to the Wolverine's meeting with Providence, they lost three-consecutive games to nationally ranked teams (#5 North Carolina, #2 Wake Forest and #9 Connecticut).
Providence took an early, 1-0, lead in the game as junior Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) tipped in a crossing pass from senior Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.) just 2:41 into play. Michigan answered at the 11:20 mark on a Kelly Fitzpatrick tally to tie the score, 1-1. Fitzpatrick's goal was assisted by Mary Fox. The Friars recorded what proved to be the game-winning goal at 20:03 when senior Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) scored off a direct shot on a penalty corner. The goal was assisted by Ewens and senior Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.).
In the first half, Providence outshot Michigan, 10-5 and held a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners. Neither team managed to find the back of the cage in the second half. The Friars were unable to get off a shot in the final 35 minutes, while their counterparts fired eight shots at the PC goalkeeper and registered 10 penalty corners. Michigan's final attempt to tie the game came as time expired after being awarded a penalty corner. Kara Lentz was fed a pass from the top of the circle and took the Wolverine's final shot, which was saved by PC's freshman goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.).
Chamberlain was sensational for the Friars in goal. She allowed just one goal and made eight saves. Six of her eight stops came in the second half. Paige Pickett took the loss in goal for Michigan. Pickett recorded five saves.
The Friars are off to their best start under the direction of fifth-year head coach Diane Madl. Overall, it marks the program's best start since 1997 when former Providence head coach Jackie Barto guided PC to an 8-0 record to start the year.
Providence (3-0) will return to action on Wednesday, September 6 against non-conference foe Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
