PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (9-5, 1-1 BIG EAST): The Providence College field hockey team enters Friday's BIG EAST Conference regular-season game against 18th-ranked Syracuse with a 9-5 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the BIG EAST. The Friars have earned victories in four of their last six games, with their only losses in the span coming to 16th-ranked Louisville (2-1) and 5th-ranked Iowa (3-1). PC won its most recent game (4-3 OT) against Northwestern on October 7 in Evanston, Ill.
The meeting against Syracuse will mark the fifth time PC has faced a nationally ranked opponent in 2007. PC is 1-3 vs. nationally ranked teams this season. On October 3, the Friars knocked off 10th-ranked Boston College for their only win over a ranked foe.
Junior Meghan Holden (Worcester, Mass.) is coming off of a fantastic week in which she scored eight points in three games. She was named BIG EAST Conference Offensive Player of the Week on October 9 for her efforts, and currently leads the team in scoring with 16 points on five goals and six assists.
Freshman Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) and senior Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.) are tied for second on the team in scoring with 15 points apiece. Ruggieri owns a team-leading seven goals and has handed out one assist, while Stoddard has career highs in goals (five) and assists (five). Stoddard was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on October 9.
Sophomore Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) and junior Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.) round out the Friar players who have reached double figures in the scoring column. Poulin has 13 points on six goals and one assist, while Lane owns a career-high 10 assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) has played 922 minutes in the cage this season and owns a 0.792 save percentage and a 1.22 goals against average.
Providence earned a 2-0 victory over Syracuse in the teams' most recent meeting on October 13, 2006 in Syracuse, N.Y. Each of the previous seven meetings between Providence and Syracuse, dating back to 1999, have been decided by one goal. The Friars are 15-12 all-time at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. During the course of the last two seasons, the Friars have posted a 10-4 mark at the Complex, including a 4-1 mark in BIG EAST regular-season play.
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY (11-3, 3-1 BIG EAST): The Syracuse University field hockey team enters Friday's game against Providence with an 11-3 overall record and a 3-1 mark in the BIG EAST. Like the Friars, the only loss of the season in BIG EAST play, thus far, for Syracuse has come at the hands of Louisville. On September 21, Syracuse fell to the Cardinals in league action, 2-1, in double overtime. The Orange have won four of their last five games, including a 4-2 decision against Villanova on October 7.
Maggie Befort and Gloria Nantulya have each reached the 20-point plateau in scoring this season. Befort leads the way with 28 points on 11 goals and six assists, while Nantulya owns 10 goals and six assists. Leigh Fawcett is third among her teammates in scoring 17 points on three goals and 11 assists.
Heather Hess has played 800 minutes in the cage this season and owns a 6-3 overall record. She has a 1.66 goals against average and a 0.791 save percentage. Christina Puggi is 5-0 this season for Syracuse in 252 minutes of action. She owns a 1.39 goals against average and a 0.722 save percentage.
