Field Hockey Game Preview vs. Connecticut

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (12-6, 4-1 BIG EAST): The 20th-ranked Providence College field hockey team enters Saturday's BIG EAST Conference regular-season game against 6th-ranked Connecticut with a 12-6 overall record and a 4-1 mark in the BIG EAST. The winner of Saturday's matchup will share the regular-season BIG EAST title with 13th-ranked Louisville, who finished their conference schedule with a 5-1 mark. Louisville's only conference loss was against Connecticut on September 28. The Cardinals fell 6-0 in Storrs, Conn.

The Friars faced Connecticut twice last season. Their first meeting was a regular-season game played at the Friar Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. Providence defeated the Huskies, 2-1. Their second meeting was in the BIG EAST Championship game. Connecticut defeated PC in the final, 4-3.

Saturday's contest marks the sixth time this season the Friars will take on a nationally ranked opponent. Providence is 2-3 overall this season against ranked teams. Their most recent ranked-opponent matchup was against No. 18 Syracuse on Friday, October 12. The Friars defeated the Orange, 3-2. Their only other win against a ranked squad was at No. 10 Boston College on October 3, 3-0.

Junior Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on October 22. Lane scored the game-winning goal on October 19 against conference foe Rutgers. She also added an assist in the 2-1 win. Two days later, Lane tallied two more assists to her team-leading tally, and defensively helped to keep Villanova off the board in the 3-0 shutout victory. On the season, the junior has 15 assists, averaging 0.83 per game. Lane is ranked third nationally in assists per game.

Senior Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.) also was honored on October 22, as a member of the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Stoddard is second on the team in points with 20, off of seven goals and six assists. In their most recent game, the Friars defeated BIG EAST foe Villanova, 3-0. The shutout in Villanova, Pa. marked the fourth shutout for sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.), and the sixth for the team overall. Chamberlain is ranked 11th nationally for save percentage (0.794) and 12th for goals against average (1.22). She has played over 1200 minutes in goal this season. Combined with graduate student Kim Vesling (Pittsford, N.Y.), who has played 66 minutes in the cage, the Friar goalkeepers rank ninth nationally in save percentage with a mark of 0.8.

UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT (17-2, 4-1 BIG EAST): The 6th-ranked University of Connecticut field hockey team enters Saturday's game against 20th-ranked Providence with a 17-2 overall record and 4-1 mark in the BIG EAST. The Huskies' only conference loss this season was against Villanova, 3-2, on September 16. Their only other loss this season came on October 7, at Princeton, 2-1. Most recently, Connecticut defeated 12th-ranked Boston College, 2-1, on Wednesday, October 24.

Leading the Huskies on offense is senior Lizzy Peijs with 39 points off of 15 goals and nine assists. On October 22, Peijs was named tot he 2007 NFHCA Division I Senior All-Star Team. Junior Lauren Aird was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on October 22. On the season, Aird has 20 points off of nine goals and two assists. She currently ranks second on her team in goals and third in points.

In goal for the Huskies, sophomore Andrea Maineiro has played 1262 minutes and holds a 1.16 goals against average and 0.747 save percentage. As of October 21, Maineiro's goals against average ranked eighth in the nation. Senior Brianna Koza has played over 75 minutes in goal this season for Connecticut. She has made five saves and allowed one goal in three appearences.
