Box Score

Providence, R.I. - The women's ice hockey team was defeated by the Bulldogs of Yale University, 2-1, on Thursday evening at Schneider Arena. With the loss, Providence fell to 6-7-2 (4-2-1 HOCKEY EAST), while Yale improved to 3-6-2 (3-4-1 ECAC) on the season.

The Friars took a 1-0 lead with just 1:05 remaining in the first period when senior Kelli Doolin (Dorchester, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season. Senior Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ont.) collected a loose puck at the red line and skated down the left wing before playing the puck in front. The puck was deflected by a Yale defender, but Doolin was there to fire a one-timer past Bulldog goalie Shivon Zillis.

However, the Bulldogs bounced back and scored twice in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. Kristen Stupay scored off an assist from Danielle Kozlowski at 5:22 and Helen Resor tallied her third goal of the season at 9:55. The Friars pulled junior goalie Danielle Ciarletta (Blaine, Minn.) for an extra skater with 1:57 left in the third period and nearly scored the equalizer when freshman Jean O'Neill (Strafford, Pa.) fired a shot from the slot that Zillis saved.

The Friars outshot the Bulldogs, 35-15 as Zillis stopped 34 shots. Ciarletta finished with 13 saves.

The Friars return to action Saturday, December 8 versus the No. 2 ranked Crimson of Harvard University. The game, which will be the last for the Friars before the winter break, will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena.
