Final Stats

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated 17th-ranked Massachusetts, 3-2, in overtime on Saturday, November 1 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. Senior Meghan Holden (Worcester, Mass.) tallied her second goal of the season to win the game with 6:36 left in the extra session. The Friars improve to 12-8 overall, while Massachusetts had its seven-game win streak snapped and falls to 14-4.

In the first half, the Friars took a 1-0 lead just 11:23 into the game as junior Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) tipped in a pass from sophomore Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.) at the left post. It marked Poulin's 16th goal of the season.

UMass evened the score, 1-1, at 26:10 as Katelyn Orlando registered her 14th goal of the season off an assist from Erin Parker. Parker fed the ball into the middle of the circle from the left side and Orlando knocked it into the cage.

Providence regained the lead just two minutes and five seconds later (28:15) as Hudson scored for the eighth time on the season, unassisted. Hudson gathered the ball just in front of the cage off a rebound and pushed it across the goal line.

In the second half, the Minutewomen tied the game, 2-2, in the 48th minute of play after being awarded penalty stroke. Makaela Potts took the stroke and buried it in the back of the cage. The Friars had several chances to score the go-ahead goal down the stretch in regulation, but UMass goalkeeper Alesha Widdall kept the Friars out of the net, forcing the game into overtime.

The Friars ended the game in the 79th minute, with just 6:36 left in the overtime session, as Hudson fed Holden with a pass on a reverse stick from the middle of the circle. Holden one-timed the pass into the back of the cage for the win. It marked Hudson's second assist of the game.

Junior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) recorded five saves for the Friars, while Widdall posted 10 saves for UMass. The Friars held a 17-12 advantage in shots, including a 13-9 edge in shots on goal. The Minutewomen earned nine penalty corners to Providence's seven.

The Friars return to action in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament on Saturday, November 8 in Storrs, Conn. More information regarding the BIG EAST Tournament seedings will be released later this evening or on Sunday, November 2.
