Bracket Set For 2008 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The 2008 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship bracket is set following the final weekend of regular-season play. The University of Connecticut will host the event on November 8-9 in Storrs, Conn. All games will be held at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex.

The Providence College Friars enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed and will play top-seeded Syracuse at 11:00 a.m. on November 8, followed by the second semifinal match-up between No. 2 seed Louisville and No. 3 seed Connecticut at 1:30 p.m. The Friars will compete at the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship for the third-consecutive season. It marks the first time the Friars have made three-straight appearances at the tournament since doing so during 1996-98.

The winner of each semifinal will advance to the BIG EAST Championship Game at 1:00 p.m. on November 9. The winner of the 2008 BIG EAST Championship will earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship.

Heading into the BIG EAST Championship, the Friars have compiled a 12-8 record (3-3 BIG EAST). Providence is coming off of a, 3-2, overtime victory against 17th-ranked Massachusetts on Saturday, November 1. It marked the Friars' third win over a ranked opponent this season, and gives the program a three-game win streak heading into the tournament.

Junior forward Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) leads the Friars with 33 points on 16 goals and one assist. Four other members of the squad have eclipsed the 20-point plateau. Sophomore Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.) has 23 points on eight goals and seven assists, while sophomore Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.), sophomore Jaime Lipski (Dallas, Pa.) and junior Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.) each have 20 points on the year. Ruggieri owns eight goals and four assists. Lipski has tallied six goals and eight assists, while Marois owns five goals and a team-high 10 assists.

Junior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) has had another stellar season in goal for Providence. She has played all 1436 minutes in the cage this season and owns a 1.56 goals against average and a 0.758 save percentage. Five of her 12 wins on the season came in the form of a shutout, including two during BIG EAST regular-season play.
