VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Villanova, 72-59, in BIG EAST action on February 12 in Villanova, Pa. Sophomore Emily Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.) netted a team-best 22 points and sophomore Kendria Holmes (Charlotte, N.C.) contributed 18 in the Friar effort. But the duo of Laura Kurz and Siobhan O'Connor teamed up to score a total of 51 points for Villanova. Kurz netted 33, while O'Connor tallied 18. The Wildcats knocked down 15 three-pointers in the game en route to the win, and Kurz and O'Connor accounted for five three-point buckets each.

In the first half, the Wildcats took a 31-22 lead into the locker room, fueled by seven three pointers (7-18). Kurz led the way in the first half with 15 points for Villanova. Cournoyer netted 11 points in the opening 20 minutes for Providence. Cournoyer connected on five of her seven field goal attempts off the bench and nailed her only free-throw attempt to cap off a three-point play with 11:28 on the clock.

The Friars started the second half on a 10-0 scoring run to take a 33-31 lead with 15:19 remaining in the game. The Wildcats finally got on the board at the 14:57 mark of the second half to start a 25-7 scoring run that covered a little more than seven minutes, giving Villanova a 16-point advantage (56-40) at the 7:36 mark. Villanova led by as many as 18 (61-43) with 5:58 remaining in the game before Providence chipped away to get within nine (64-55) on a 12-3 run with 1:02 on the clock. Villanova was nine-of-11 from the free-throw line in the final 1:17 of the game. They marked the only free-throw attempts of the night for the Wildcats.

Junior Shantee Darrian (Trenton, N.J.) led the Friars on the boards with eight rebounds. Stacie Witman hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds for Villanova. The two teams finished the game with 34 rebounds apiece.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, February 16 against St. John's in BIG EAST play. The game is scheduled to be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. at Noon. It marks the first of three-straight home contests for Providence.
