Providence, R.I. - PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (3-6, 0-2 BIG EAST): The Providence College field hockey team enters this weekend's matchup with a 3-6 overall record and an 0-2 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. The Friars remain ranked 19th for the second consecutive week in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Coaches' Poll. The team will host Villanova on Saturday, October 3 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
The Friars are coming off a pair of 2-1 losses last weekend against No. 6 Syracuse and No. 20 Albany. According to fieldhockeycorner.com, the Friars have the toughest schedule in the nation and are ranked ninth in the RPI. The Friars will look for their first BIG EAST Conference win of the season against Villanova. Senior Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) leads the team in points with 12. All 12 of Poulin's points have come off of six goals. Hudson is second on the team with seven points on three goals and one assist. Senior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) has played in eight games and has seen 503 minutes of action. Chamberlain, has a goals against average of 2.08 and a .769 save percentage.
The Friars hold a 4-3 series lead against Villanova since Diane Madl became head coach in 2002. In last year's meeting, the Friars traveled to Villanova and posted 3-0 shutout victory.
VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY (6-2, 1-0 BIG EAST): The Villanova field hockey team travels to Providence coming off a 4-0 win against the University of Pennsylvania on September 23. Villanova is on a four-game win streak and is tied for third place in BIG EAST Conference standings. In Villanova's only conference game of the season, they defeated Rutgers 6-1, on September 18. The Wildcats are led by junior Meredith Sabatini who has 20 points on nine goals and two assists. Lauren Wuzzardo also has played a key part in the Wildcats offense providing seven goals and three assists, totaling 17 points. Megan Goelz, who was named to the BIG EAST honor roll this week, has seen most of the time in goal and has posted a 1.13 goals against average and a .793 save percentage.
