The men's swimming and diving team defeated Fairfield on Saturday, October 31 in Taylor Natatorium, 154-146. The women fell to Fairfield, 190-107.
The men's team was led by freshmen Eric Burtchell (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Chris Morales (Ridgewood, N.J.). Burtchell placed first in the 400m freestyle (4:24.13), 800m freestyle (9:10.96) and helped the Friars take the 200m medley event (1:52.20). Morales placed second behind Burtchell in the 800m freestyle and won the 200m butterfly in a time of 2:14.84, coming in almost four seconds ahead of the field. In the 1m diving event, freshman Ben Kardian (Valhalla, N.Y.) earned 146.02 points, which was good enough for a second place finish.
The women's team was led by veteran swimming captain Carrie Lamb (New Paltz, N.Y.) who won the 100m backstroke in a time of 1:10.86, out-touching Fairfield's Norah Gentile by less than a second. Lamb teamed up with freshmen Samantha Schlich (Massepequa, N.Y.), Erin Nanna (Westwood, Mass.) and sophomore Caroline Caliri (Marblehead, Mass.) to win the 400m freestyle relay. Freshmen Allie Black (Mystic, Conn.), Amie Fracker (Trumbull, Conn.) and sophomore Melanie Dubois (Springfield, Mass.) excelled in the first heat of the 1m diving event, placing first (151.05 points) second (147.52) and third (118.80), respectively.
The Friars are back in action Saturday, November 7 when they take on intra-state rival Rhode Island at 1:00 p.m. in Kingston, R.I.
