The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed competition in the Harold Anderson Invitational yesterday. The men's team finished second out of five squads with 694.5 points. The women's team finished fifth out of five teams with a cumulative score of 496.

Eleven Friars posted "A" qualification standards for the BIG EAST Championships held in February in Pittsburgh, Pa. The 11 swimmers include senior captain Carrie Lamb (New Paltz, N.Y.) who qualified for the 100 and 200 backstroke, freshman Erin Nanna (Westwood, Mass.) who qualified for the 50 and 100 freestyle, freshman Sam Schlich (Massepequa, N.Y.) who qualified for the 50 and 100 freestyle, freshman Kelly Lamoreaux (East Greenwich, R.I.) who qualified for the 100 breaststroke and sophomore Caroline Caliri (Marblehead, Mass.) who qualified for the 100 freestyle.

For the men, senior Tim Reilly (Floral Park, N.Y.) qualified for the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly and senior Mathew Card (Bow, N.H.) qualified for the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Card posted possibly the most impressive victory of the day as he took the 100 freestyle event with a time of 47.69 edging out the 31 other competitors in the field. In addition to Reilly and Card, senior Mike Loftis (Branford, Conn.) also qualified for three events (100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly). Other swimmers who qualified for the Championships include sophomore Matt Green (Westfield, N.J.), sophomore Colin Casciano (Hewitt, N.J.) and freshman Chris Morales (Ridgewood, N.J.). Morales posted an impressive victory in the 400 IM (4:15.67), defeating the field by nearly seven seconds. Casciano also did well to capture the 100 butterfly event with a time of 52.60.

In addition to the 11 swimmers who posted sufficient times for the "A" standards, nine Friars achieved multiple "B" qualification standards in their specialty events. Tallied up, team members made a total of 48 A and B standards as the Friars focused qualifying in as many events as possible for the BIG EAST Championships.

In the 1m diving event, freshman Allie Black (Mystic, Conn.) finished first with a score of 224.77 while teammate freshman Amie Fracker (Trumbull, Conn.) finished right behind her in second with a score of 219.96. Freshman Ben Kardian (Valhalla, N.Y.) took the 1m diving event for the Friar men's team with a score of 228.30.

On Tuesday, January 5, the Friars will travel to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands for their annual winter training trip.
