PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Villanova 58-49 on Wednesday, February 9 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. With the victory the Friars improved to 11-11 (4-6 BIG EAST) on the season as the Wildcats moved to 8-15 (0-10 BIG EAST). The victory marks the first time Providence has recorded back-to-back conference wins this season.

In the opening minutes of the first half the two teams exchanged baskets as PC held a 17-14 lead with 9:43 remaining in the frame. The Friars went on a 15-0 run at the 8:19 mark to open up a 32-14 lead. Providence took a 34-17 lead into the half. For the half Providence shot (14-of-30 for a 46.7 percentage) as their defense held the Wildcats to 6-of-26 from the floor (23.1%). Senior Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.) led the Friars with 10 points in the half.

Villanova started the second half on a 15-4 run to cut the PC lead to 38-32 with 11:35 remaining in the game. The six-point difference would be as close as Villanova got for the remainder of the contest. Villanova shot 8-of-16 (50%) from behind the 3-point line over the final 20 minutes, which allowed it to hang around.

Four Friars finished the game in double figures. Wright tied her season-high tonight with 15 points. Joining Wright were senior Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) who finished the game with 12 points, as junior Lola Wells (Fontana, Calif.) and junior Miranda Tate (Bolingbrook, Ill.) each finished the contest with 10. For the game the Friars out rebounded the Wildcats 47-25. PC also held the edge in field goal percentage shooting 23-of-56 (41.1%) compared to Villanova's 18-of-55 (32.7%).

The Friars return to action on Saturday, February 12 against No. 2/2 Connecticut. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is slated for 2:05 p.m. The game will be tape delayed on Cox Sports.
