PROVIDENCE, R.I. & FAIRFIELD, Conn. -
The Providence College women's tennis team went 0-2 over the weekend. On Saturday, April 9, the squad fell to Marquette, 5-2, at the Providence College Tennis Courts. On Sunday morning, the team lost to Fairfield, 6-1, at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts in Fairfield, Conn. With the losses, the Friars drop to 4-13 on the year and 0-6 in the BIG EAST. Marquette improved to 17-7 (6-2 BIG EAST), and Fairfield is now 9-7 (4-0 MAAC).
On Saturday, April 9, sophomore Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) was tested mightily by Marquette's Olga Fischer in the No. 1 singles match. Aviles-Duron, who was down one set and 0-4 in the second, exhibited strong resolve by rallying to win the second set and taking the third set in a tiebreak. Freshman Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) also scored for the Friars, as she downed her opponent in the No. 2 singles slot.
On Sunday, April 10, senior captain Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) led the Friar effort against the Stags. Sinha teamed up with junior Melissa Ferry (Cumberland, R.I.) to win 8-6 at No. 3 doubles. The win marked the third win for the pair in the No. 3 doubles spot this year and second for the spring season. Sinha carried that momentum into singles play, as she dropped Kristen Liu in the No. 3 singles spot, 6-4, 6-3.
Aviles-Duron and Bernardez had won six straight singles matches dating back to March 29 against Connecticut before losing their respective matches to Fairfield on Sunday.
The team is back in action on Saturday, April 16 when it hosts Seton Hall at the Providence College Tennis Courts. The contest is set for 4 p.m. The Friars also will host Villanova on Sunday, April 17 at 9 a.m. The meeting with the Wildcats is the last of the regular season for the Friars and is the team's Senior Day.
