PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey program is highlighting each of its current student-athletes in a segment entitled "Meet The Friars". Each student athlete answers a series of questions, allowing followers of the program to gain a closer perspective of the team and the student-athletes whom comprise the roster.

In this segment, we get to meet Emilie Stehly (Valley Center, Calif.), who traveled across the country to join the team in the fall of 2009. As a sophomore in 2010, Emilie played in 18 games and appeared in the starting line-up 14 times, primarily as a defender. She took three shots as a member of the offensive corner unit and also registered one defensive save on the year.

1. Why did you decide to come to PC?

I decided to come to Providence College because no other school can compare to Providence College and Providence College field hockey. Early on, I never considered PC, and to be honest, I had never heard of PC before Coach Madl and Tina found me at the Festival in California. Our team is like no other, and I have never felt so loved and welcomed by anyone other than my family. Coach Madl and Tina are not only amazing coaches but amazing people as well. The character, respect and high values that PCFH lives by are what captured me. This is not just a team but a family. The school has a great education program and the Dominican tradition of PC sealed the deal for me. Providence means, "God's will" and it is definitely through His providence that I am here. I am a part of something that is bigger than myself, and I don't think I can do enough in my four years to express my appreciation, pride, and thanksgiving for being given the opportunity and privilege to compete as a member of the Providence College field hockey team. I am so proud to be a Friar!

2. Have you ever been on national TV? If so, why?

I actually have been on national TV! My family owns a citrus and avocado farm, but when I was younger we also raised exotic animals. We had zebras, Watusi cattle, ostriches, emus, camels, rheas, pygmy hippos, different snakes like pythons, rosy boas, corn snakes, and rattlesnakes. When I was five years old, the Disney Channel came out to our ranch and did a segment on our family. They thought our family was pretty unique considering my dad is one of eleven children, we raise exotic animals and we're citrus and avocado farmers. On the show, we ate an ostrich egg at my house (equivalent to 24 chicken eggs), then went down to my grandparents' house and explored the ranch and all the animals. Even though I was five, it was definitely a memorable day, and a fun video to show friends!

3. What is your most prized possession?

I don't know if family is considered a possession, but they are the most treasured gift in my life. Without my family, I would not be the person I am today. My parents have given me the gift of my Catholic Faith and have raised me to be a person of high moral character. I would be lost without my siblings, Nicholas, Damian, Thomas, Madeline, Bernadette and Raymond. Even though it is hard to be so far away from them for long periods of time, I know that my family will always be there for me. They have given me unbelievable support and I can't thank or appreciate them enough for the many blessings I have received because of their enormous sacrifice. Friends come and go, but family is forever, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

4. What is the best advice you have ever received and from whom?

I have received so much wisdom and advice from countless people over the years but the one piece of advice that has been hammered into my head is said to me every time I speak to my dear Grandpa Stehly. He always reminds me that in this world there is a right and there is a wrong. He says that there will always be people who do the wrong thing, but you do not have to join them. He says that you are to respect everyone, no matter what their actions. Every person has dignity and is to be respected as a human being, but you do not have to participate in their actions. "Be nice to everyone. Keep the fight! Stand with your two feet on the ground and go to Mass. God has given us the greatest gift of Jesus in the Eucharist." -Grandpa Stehly
