Women's Tennis Concludes Its 2012-13 Season

The Providence College women's tennis team concluded its 2012-13 season with a loss to seventh seeded Georgetown at the BIG EAST Championships in Tampa, Fla. on Saturday, April 20. The 12th seeded Friars fell 4-1 to the Hoyas.

Georgetown took an early 2-0 lead with wins at the No. 1 and 5 singles positions. Freshman Olivia Hogan (Gaithersburg, Md.) fell to Liz Hamlin (7-5, 6-2) in the No. 5 position, while senior Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) dropped back-to-back sets at the No. 1 position to Victoria Sekely (6-2, 6-1).

Sophomore Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.) closed the Hoyas lead to 2-1 with a win at the No. 3 position. Corder defeated Madeline Jaeger (6-3, 6-3) in straight sets.

Georgetown quickly reclaimed its two point advantage with a win in the No. 6 position. Sophomore Caitlin Foley (Holden, Mass.) fell to Taylor Perz (6-4, 2-6, 6-1) to give the Hoyas a 3-1 lead.

In doubles play freshman Alana Prinos (Foxborough, Mass.) and Corder were defeated by Kelly Comolli and Jaeger (8-1) in the No. 2 position. Aviles-Duron and junior Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) fell at the No. 1 position to give the Hoyas the 4-1 win. Aviles-Duron and Bernardez dropped a 8-2 decision to Hamlin and Sekely.

The Friars finished its season with a 14-8 overall record and a 2-3 record in BIG EAST play. It was the best finish for the team since the 2001-02 season when the team went 11-8 on the season. The 2012-13 team also posted the most wins since the 1999-00 team, who tallied 18 wins over the course of its season.
