SEWELL, N.J. - The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams have begun competing at the BIG EAST Championships, hosted by Glouster County Institute of Technology, in Sewell, N.J.
Senior Jill Mullany (Monroe, Conn.), sophomore Reilly O'Connell (West Barnstable, Mass.), freshman Mary McKenna (Wethersfield, Conn.), junior Kelly O'Neill (Rye, N.Y.) completed the 800y freestyle relay in 7:41.56, only .33 seconds behind the school record that was set last year at the BIG EAST Championships. O'Neill, junior Leia Federiconi (Williamsville, N.Y.), freshman Helen Smith(Belmont, Mass.), and O'Connell finished the 200y medley relay in 1:47.91.
On the men's side, both relay races finished in school record times. The 800y freestyle race, swum by junior John Fatigati (Mahwah, N.J.), junior Justin Tse (Framingham, Mass.), freshman Zachary Begnaud (Natchitoches, La.), and graduate student Kyle McLaughlin (Warrington, Pa.) finished in 6:49.12, dashing a school record set in 1996 by five seconds. The 200y medley relay, consisting of Fatigati, senior Andrew St. Pierre (Fairhaven, Mass.), senior Connor Lui(Monroe, Conn.), and McLaughlin, finished with a time of 1:34.93. This time broke the 1:35.11 school record set in 1998.
The BIG EAST Championships will continue tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 19 starting at 10 a.m.
