Field Hockey Edges Maine On The Road, 3-2

9/26/2014 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey

Sept. 26, 2014 Final Stats ORONO, MAINE - Freshman Megan Hamilton (Warrington, Pa.) recorded the first hat trick of her collegiate career to lift the Providence College field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Maine on Friday, Sept. 26 in Orono, Maine. It marks the fourth-consecutive victory for the Friars as they improve to 6-3 overall.

"It was a hard fought game today against a solid Maine team," Providence College Head Coach Diane Madl said. "It really came down to gutting it out, and I'm really proud of our players. The really fought hard for each other today."

The first 35 minutes of play ended in a 0-0 draw. Providence out-shot Maine, 4-2, in the opening half and the Black Bears held a 2-0 edge in penalty corners.

The second half was a much different story, and yielded a total of five goals. The Black Bears struck first, just 1:38 into the action as Danielle Aviani found the back off the cage off a feed from Holly Stewart.

Providence responded with back-to-back goals by Hamilton in the 41st and 55th minute to take a 2-1 lead. The first was unassisted as she collected a rebound and knocked it by the Black Bear's goalkeeper. The second was a deflection off a penalty corner and was assisted by senior Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany).

Maine's Annabelle Hamilton tied the game, 2-2, in the 57th minute after the Black Bears were awarded a penalty stroke.

Hamilton completed the hat trick with the game-winning goal in the 61st minute. Tietze played the ball into the circle from just outside the 25 and Hamilton redirected it into the cage. Tietze was credited with the assist. Hamilton now leads the Friars in goals scored (eight) and points (17). The rookie has scored at least one goal in each of the Friars' last four games.

"Meg had a great game in front of the net, scoring a hat trick," Madl said. It's great seeing her come into her own, along with the rest of the team. We're looking forward to carrying this momentum into our next game against Miami."

For the game, Providence held a 15-6 advantage in shots and also topped the Black Bears in penalty corners, 4-2. All four of the Friars' penalty corners came during the second half, and the team capitalized on two en route to the victory.

The Friars return to action on Sunday, Sept. 28 against Miami (OH). The game will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at Noon.
