CINCINNATI, OHIO. - The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the Xavier Musketeers, 78-69, on Saturday, February 7 at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Senior LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) led the Friars with 24 points and nine rebounds.
Providence played strong in the first half and entered the half with a 40-34 lead after Henton scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds to pace the Friars. Trevon Bluiett had 10 points for the Musketeers in the first 20 minutes of action.
In the second half Friar head coach Ed Cooley left 2 minutes into play due to illness with PC leading, 42-34. Associate Head Andre LaFluer coached the team for the final 18 minutes. Xavier opened the half on a 19-7 run through the first seven minutes, and held a 57-47 lead with 12:11 left in the game. The Friars crawled back into the game and were able to force a 64-64 tie with 6:33 left in the game. However, the Musketeers ripped off 10 unanswered points over three minutes to hold a 74-64 lead with 3:09 left. From that point the Friars could not get any closer than five points as Xavier earned the victory.
In addition to Henton's 24, freshman Ben Bentil (WIlminton, Del.) had a strong game with 16 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Kris Dunn (New London, Conn.) had 11 points, eight assists and six rebounds.
Xavier was led by Blueiett and Jalen Reynolds who each scored 19 points. The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, February 11 versus nationally ranked Villanova at 8 p.m. on Fox Sports 1.
