PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College swimming and diving team went head to head against Boston College at the Taylor Natatorium in Providence, R.I. on Friday Jan. 29. The Friar men and women were both defeated by the Eagles with scores of 147-56 and 120-85, respectively.
On the women's side, sophomore Katherine Fallon (Warren, N.J.) led the way with first place finishes in the 400m freestyle (4:28.88) and the 200m freestyle (2:07.89). Fallon was also part of the Friars' winning 400m freestyle relay (4:06.12), along with teammates Kelly Quinn (Garden City, N.Y.), Mary McKenna (Wethersfield, Conn.), and Reilly O'Connell (West Barnstable, Mass.).
Freshman Kaylie O'Connell (Stoneham, Mass) took first place in the 800m freestyle with a time of 9:34.71. Also, Sophomore Helen Smith (Belmont, Mass.) placed first in the 200m backstroke (2:22.93).
Second place finishes for the Friars included Quinn in the 50m freestyle (28:00), Colleen Hartigan (Suffern, N.Y.) in the 400m IM (5:18.56), and the 400m medley relay team (4:13.12).
On the men's side, freshman Jerod Magazine (Coto de Caza, Calif.) grabbed the only first place finish on the men's team in the 800m freestyle (8:54.33).
Senior Zach Begnaud (Natchitoches, La.) finished second in the 400m freestyle (4:19.20). Freshman Ryan Tremmell placed second in the 200m breaststroke (2:33.01). Also, freshman Jonathan Batista (Southboro, Mass.) finished in second place in the 200m backstroke (2:11.85).
The Providence College Friars' swimming and diving returns to the pool for their second meet of the weekend as they host the University of Maine Black Bears. The meet will be the Friars senior night and the the last home meet of the season for the Friars. The Friars take on the Bears in Providence, R.I. on Saturday Jan. 30 at 2:00 P.M. ET in the Taylor Natatorium.
