NORFOLK, VA. - The Providence College field hockey team punched its ticket to the 2016 BIG EAST Championship presented by Jeep, with a dramatic, 1-0, victory over Old Dominion in overtime on Oct. 28 in Norfolk, Va.
Freshman Mary O'Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.) tallied the game-winning goal 9:44 into overtime, as she deflected a feed from senior Adrienne Houle (Burlington, Ontario) on a penalty corner. It marked O'Reilly's first career goal, while Houle picked up her third assist of the season.
The two teams went to halftime in a scoreless draw, 0-0. The Monarchs held a 12-3 advantage in shots, including a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. ODU also held an 8-1 edge in penalty corners after the first 35 minutes of play. Junior goalkeeper Megan Guilbert (Morganville, N.J.) kept the clean sheet for Providence with four saves, while ODU goalkeeper Kealsie Robles recorded two saves heading into halftime.
In the second half, Providence settled in and held a 6-5 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corners. The Friar defense held firm, keeping the clean sheet in order, and forcing overtime.
Guilbert and the Friar defense was outstanding for Providence in the second half, and at the end of regulation Guilbert had accumulated six saves.
In overtime, Old Dominion put the pressure on early, firing off four shots within the first seven minutes of action -- two of which were on frame. Guilbert turned each effort aside.
The Friars were awarded a penalty corner at 79:23 -- and the Friars cashed in for the win.
It marked Providence's seventh overtime game of the year, which ties the program record for OT games in a single season. Providence posted a 5-2 record in those games, including a 4-0 mark during BIG EAST regular-season play. The Friars also played seven overtime games during the 1986 season.
Guilbert finished the game with eight saves and earned her third shutout of the season -- and career. Her eight saves tied her season high, previously set against Maine (Aug. 26) and Temple (Sept. 16). It also ties Guilbert's career high in saves (Sept. 20, 2015 vs. Columbia)
Providence concludes regular-season play with a 13-5 overall record, including a 5-2 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. The Friars' 13 victories mark the most since 2007, when the program finished 14-8 and advanced to the title game of the BIG EAST Tournament.
The Friars have assured themselves at least a tie for second place in the standings and will be the No. 2 or the No. 3 seed in the tournament, pending outcomes of games to be played later this afternoon.
The BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship presented by Jeep, is scheduled to be played at Temple University's Howarth Field in Philadelphia, Pa. The semifinals are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 4 and will be played at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. The Friars will face their opponent in the 4:00 p.m. match.
The winner of each semifinal will advance to the BIG EAST Tournament Championship Game, slated for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6.
The semifinals and championship game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) via FOX Sports Go.
