Final Stats

NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Quinnipiac, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. It marked the first-ever BIG EAST Conference regular-season match-up between the two teams, as Quinnipiac joined the league as an affiliate member in field hockey in 2016. With the victory, Providence improves to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the BIG EAST. Quinnipiac dropped to 2-10 (2-2 BIG EAST).

The Friars and Bobcats played to a scoreless draw in the first half. The Bobcats held a 5-4 advantage in shots and the teams were even in penalty corners, with two apiece.

Providence got on the scoreboard early in the second half to take a 1-0 lead as freshman Sylvia Miller (Severn, Md.) knocked home a rebound, unassisted, in the 38th minute. It marked Miller's fifth goal of the season.

Quinnipiac answered back in the 40th minute as it converted a penalty corner opportunity. Angie King was credited with the goal, while Lauren Belskie contributed the assist. It proved to be the Bobcat's only shot attempt of the second half, as the Friars controlled the majority of play in the final 35 minutes of play.

After regulation, the score was knotted, 1-1. Providence held a 10-6 advantage in shots, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. Both teams recorded three penalty corners.

In overtime, the Friars claimed victory just 2:55 into the action. Junior Megan Hamilton (Warrington, Pa.) tallied the game-winning goal as senior Adrienne Houle (Burlington, Ontario) received the insert and dumped a pass left to Hamilton, who one-timed the ball into the right side of the cage.

It marked Hamilton's fifth goal of the season, and first game winner of the year. She moves into a tie for 17th on the Friars' all-time career goals list, with 24, joining Ashlyn Hudson '10. Houle was credited with the assist on the play.

Junior goalkeeper Megan Guilbert (Morganville, N.J.) collected three saves in the win for Providence. Olivia Golini collected seven saves for Quinnipiac, while Angie King added a defensive save.

The Friars return to action on Friday, Oct. 14 against BIG EAST foe Georgetown. The game will be played at 1:00 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
