SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Providence College women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision on Thursday April, 14 to the Bryant Bulldogs. The Bulldogs took two out of the three doubles matches and all but one singles match in order to clinch the victory in the first match between the teams in three years.

Senior Hannah Zangari and junior Amanda Pitocco captured a 6-4 victory out of the second doubles position over Nina Luiggi and Briana Leonard, but Friar losses out of the first and third doubles positions handed the overall doubles point to Bryant.

The Friars' lone singles win of the day came from freshman Risa Takenaka, who continued her outstanding first season as a Friar. Takenaka took a hard fought first set 6-3, and battled back from an early deficit in the second set to finish off Briana Leonard by a score of 6-3, 6-3 out of fourth singles. The freshman's athleticism and strong defensive tennis extended points and forced Leonard into unforced errors.

"I definitely just focused on taking it one point at a time today," Takenaka said after the match. "I couldn't allow myself to get discouraged because every game was close and it was really important that I keep it together mentally in order to finish each game."

The Friars will look to bounce back with a strong effort against an outstanding DePaul University Blue Demons team on Friday, April 15th at 3 p.m. at Providence College. The Blue Demons are ranked #61 in the nation by the ITA.
