Late Comeback Falls Short As Merrimack Edges No. 16 Men's Hockey, 3-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 16 Providence College men's hockey was edged by the Merrimack Warriors on Sunday afternoon, 3-2, despite a late comeback bid by the Friars in the closing minutes.

NOTES
-Merrimack got off to a quick lead 3:00 into regulation, 1-0, with a goal on the power play by Liam Walsh. It was just the sixth power play goal Providence has given up this season.
 
-The Warriors struck again for a 2-0 lead with a goal from Chase Gresock with 8:45 remaining in period one.
 
-Liam Walsh scored his second of the night and the game-winning goal just 1:30 later to give Merrimack a 3-0 lead, which they carried into the first intermission.
 
-The teams were scoreless in the second period and Merrimack carried their three-goal lead into the second intermission. Stauber recorded six saves in the period.
 
-Merrimack's Max Newton buried one in the third with 8:50 remaining in regulation, but the goal was wiped out due to goaltender interference.
 
-Jaxson Stauber was pulled from net at 17:48 for the extra attacker.
 
-Michael Callahan's third goal of the season put Providence on the board, 3-1, with 2:31 left in regulation. Callahan was assisted by Patrick Moynihan and Jason O'Neill on the man-up goal.
 
-Jason O'Neil cut the deficit to 3-2 with only 55.8 seconds left in regulation, assisted by Brett Berard and Ben Mirageas.
 
-Providence's final push fell short and Merrimack held its 3-2 lead at the buzzer.
 
-The Friars' six-game unbeaten streak came to end on Sunday.
