No. 14 Men's Hockey Falls to No. 6/7 UMass in Hockey East Semifinals, 5-2

AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 14 Providence College men's hockey team fell to No. 6/7 UMass, 5-2, in the 2021 Hockey East Semifinals, on Wednesday night (March 17) at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass.

NOTES
-UMass's Josh Lopina struck only 52 seconds into the game, claiming an early 1-0 lead for the Minutemen. The play was reviewed for potential goaltender interference, but the call on the ice stood.
-Brett Berard notched the equalizer, 1-1, at 6:00, beating Lindberg with a wrap-around for his fifth goal of the season. Nick Poisson and Ben Mirageas assisted on the play.
-UMass' Aaron Bohlinger was whistled for hooking just 40 seconds after Berard's and the Friars cashed in.
-Parker Ford capitalized on the power play for the Friars at 8:14, putting Providence up 2-1. Ford rocketed a shot over the shoulder of Lindberg off a feed from Tyce Thompson for his seventh goal of the season and third in as many games.
-Zac Jones struck for UMass at 11:46 and the teams entered the first intermission tied 2-2.
-After a back-and-forth battle in the opening period, the Minutemen regained the lead, 3-2, early into the second with a goal from Bobby Trivigno (1:22).
-The Minutemen controlled possession for the majority of the second period, outshooting the Friars by a 10-3 margin in the middle period. UMass held their 3-2 lead going into the second intermission.
-UMass extended their lead in the third period, 4-2, with a goal by George Mika at 9:32 of the third period.
-Providence pulled goalie Jaxson Stauber with 2:02 to go in regulation but UMass closed out the game with an empty-net goal by Marc Del Gaizo, pushing the score to 5-2 with 42 seconds to play.
-The Friars dropped to 0-2-2 against UMass this season.
