HOPKINTON, N.H.– The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed in the New England Championship today (Oct. 11) at the Hopkinton Fairgrounds in Hopkinton, N.H. Senior Niamh O'Mahony of Kerry, Ireland, who finished third (17:14.89), led the team to a third-place finish out of 19 teams on the 5K course. Graduate student
Liam Back of New Plymouth, England finished third (24:23.11) and led the Friar men's team to a second-place finish overall (17 teams competed) on the 8K course.
The top seven runners for the Friar women's team did not compete at the New England Championships.
Led by O'Mahony, the women's team scored 93 points. Other Friars who scored on the women's side were sophomore
Reese Fahys of East Greenwhich, R.I. (ninth, 18:05.72), sophomore
Kiera Hall of Christchurch, New Zealand (17th, 18:18.90), senior
Claire Kelly of Conwall on Hudson, N.Y. (24th, 18:30.77) and senior
Olivia Belt of Cumberland, R.I. (44th, 19:02.45).
The top three runners for the men's team did not run.
The Providence men's team scored 75 points. Following Back for the Friars was freshman
Liam McCay of Liverpool, England (eighth, 24:41.69), sophomore
Will Johnston of Auckland, New Zealand (13th, 24:55.37), graduate student
Shane Coffey of Naas, Ireland (24th, 25:13.29) and junior
Zane Powell of Auckland, New Zealand (27th, 25:16.86).
The Friar men's and women's teams will return to action on Friday, October 18 at the Princeton Fall Classic in Princeton, N.J., beginning at 10:30 a.m. ET.
