Friar Men’s And Women’s Cross Country Teams To Compete At BIG EAST Championship

The Friars will travel to Omaha, Neb. for the BIG EAST Championship on Friday.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the BIG EAST Championship on Friday, Oct. 31. The meet will be held at Mahoney State Park in Ashland, Neb. The men's 8K championship race will begin at Noon ET/11:00 a.m. local, followed by the women's 6K championship at 12:50 p.m. ET/11:50 a/m. local. The event will be streamed on ESPN+.

Leading the way for the women will be sophomore Gabrielle Schmidt (Brisbane, Australia), senior Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) and sophomore Anna Gardiner (Downpatrick, Northern Ireland). On Friday, Oct. 17 at the Nuttycombe Invitational, Schmidt led the Friar women's team over the 6K course with a time of 21:06.9. After Schmidt, Laverty and Gardiner finished in 21:19.9 and 21:27.1, respectively.

Also expected to compete at the BIG EAST Championship will be senior Niamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland), sophomore Emily Bush (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and freshman Kate Currie (Christchuch, New Zealand.

The Friar women finished second out of 11 teams at the 2024 BIG EAST Championship, led by an impressive second-place finish by Alex Millard (Kent, England) (19:50.7). The Friar women have claimed eight BIG EAST team titles and 11 individual titles all-time. 

The men's team is led by sophomore Cormac Dixon (Dublin, Ireland) who had an impressive race at the Princeton Fall Classic on Friday, October 17, as he placed 23rd (23:36.6). Also leading the Friars is freshman Oliver Neate (Sydney, Australia) who finished 32nd (24:14.94) in the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Friday, October 3. Dixon and Neate will be joined by sophomore Daniel Prescott (Christchurch, New Zealand), sophomore Elliott Pugh (Tauranga, New Zealand),  junior Will Johnston (Auckland, New Zealand), sophomore Liam McCay (Liverpool, England) and sophomore Ryan LoCicero (Bloomfield, N.J.).

At the 2024 BIG EAST Championship, the Friar men finished fourth out of nine teams, led by Michael Morgan (Sligo, Ireland) with a seventh-place finish (24:02.66). The Friar men's program has captured 15 BIG EAST team titles and 11 individual titles.
