Men’s Lacrosse Defeated Marquette On Senior Day, 14-2

Richie Joseph paced the Friars with six points on five goals and one assist.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Marquette (6-5, 1-2 BIG EAST), 14-2, on Saturday, April 12 in Providence, R.I.  With the win, the Friars improve to 5-7 on the season and 1-2 in BIG EAST play. Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) recorded a game-high six points on five goals and one assist. Albert Paniccia anchored the Friars defense with a game-high three caused turnovers and four ground balls.  

 
1stQuarter: 

• Providence scored four unanswered goals in the first quarter.  

Ryan Bell (Smithtown, N.Y.) started the scoring action to give PC an early 1-0 lead at the 12:39 mark.

• Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) followed with a goal in the ensuing offensive possession (9:50).  

• The Friars extended their lead with a goal from Jay Wilkerson (Baltimore Maryland) at 7:04. 

• Joseph found the back of the net late in the first quarter (0:39), giving Providence a 4-0 lead. Bell was credited with the assist.

• The Friars recorded four caused turnovers in the first quarter.  

 
2ndQuarter: 

Marquette opened the second quarter with a goal that cut the Friars lead to 4-1 (13:01).  

Sam Brazell (DeWitt, N.Y.) responded with a goal and extended the Friars lead to 5-1 (12:08).  

• Joseph added to the Friars lead with his second goal of the day at the 4:53 mark to make it a 6-1 lead at halftime.

Dan Donahue recorded two saves in the first half. 

• The Friars outshot Marquette 29-11 in the opening 30 minutes of play.   

3rdQuarter: 

• The Friars scored five unanswered goals in the third quarter to gain an 11-1 advantage.

• Joseph started the scoring with his third goal of the game and gave the Friars a 7-1 lead (13:44). 

Jack Horrigan (Lutherville, Md.) scored his eighth man-up goal of the season and extended Providence's lead to 8-1 (10:55).  

• Joseph followed with back-to-back goals to bring the score to 10-1.

• Chambers added his second goal of the day and gave the Friars double-digit lead with 4:04 to play (11-1).  

• Providence outshot Marquette 16-2 in the third quarter.  

  

4thQuarter 

• Horrigan netted his second goal of the day and extended the Friar lead to 12-1 (12:25).

Ben Dale (Wheaton, Ill.) scored for the Friar at 10:35.  

• Marquette found the back of the net and made the score 13-2 with 8:36 remaining in the fourth quarter.  

• Brazell added his second goal of the game and gave Providence a 14-2 lead (7:55).  

Notes: 

• Joseph netted six points on five goals and one assist. The junior has recorded 113 career points (83 goals / 30 assists) and moved to 23rd on the Friars' all-time scoring list. Joseph also ranks 16th on the Friars' all-time goals list (83 goals).  

 Horrigan scored two man-up goals. The senior leads the NCAA in man-up goals, with nine on the season. Horrigan has also recorded 127 career points (103 goals / 24 assists) and ranks 16th on the Friars' all-time scoring list. Horrigan's 103 career goals rank fifth in all-time goals scored at Providence.  

• Bell recorded five points on a goal and four assists. The Friars' all-time leading scorer owns 219 career points and is the first player in program history to reach 200 points. Bell is also the program's all-time assist leader (157 assists). 

• Four Friars scored multiple goals in the team's win.  

• Donahue recorded four saves in the game.  

Quinn McConnaughey went 12-20 from the faceoff 'X' in the game and picked up four groundballs.

• Providence outshot Marquette 53-20.  

• The Friars defense recorded eight caused turnovers and 39 ground balls.  

• Providence held Marquette to two goals. It marks the fewest goals Providence has allowed since 2005 when the Friars defeated Siena, 10-2.  

• It also marks the fewest goals the Friars have allowed in a BIG EAST Conference game, since the league began sponsoring lacrosse in 2010.  

WHAT'S NEXT...The Friars will travel to Denver University on Saturday, April 19. Faceoff is set for 5:00 p.m. (ET).
