DENVER, COLO. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated No. 16/16 Denver, 10-6, on Friday, April 19 in BIG EAST Conference action at Peter Barton Stadium in Denver, Colo. It marked the Friars' first victory over Denver in the all-time series. Providence also clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Championship with one regular-season game remaining on the schedule. The Friars improved to 6-7 overall (2-2 BIG EAST), while Denver dropped to 7-6 (2-2 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
•
Rhett Chambers scored back-to-back, unassisted, goals at 12:09 and 5:47 of the first quarter to give the Friars a 2-0 lead.
• Just 22-seconds after Chambers' scored his second goal,
Ryan Bell found the back of the net, unassisted, to make it a 3-0 game.
•
Jack Horrigan closed the scoring in the first quarter with 4:17 to play. It marked his 31
st goal of the season and he was assisted by Bell.
• The Friars outshot Pioneers 12-3 in the opening 15 minutes.
2ND QUARTER:
• Horrigan recorded two more goals to pick up the hat trick to start the second quarter scoring and gave Providence a 6-0 lead. His first of the frame came at 11:08, unassisted. He scored again at 8:30 off a feed from Bell.
• Denver got on the scoreboard for the first time with 7:56 left on the clock in the second quarter. Marek Tzagournis was credited with the goal as his pass from behind the goal was deflected by a defenseman and the ball trickled over the goal line.

Richie Joseph notched his first goal of the game, and 31
st of the season, at the 5:39 mark.
•
Tyler Flynn made it an 8-1 advantage with 5:39 left on the clock as he picked up a ground ball in front of the cage off an initial goalkeeper save and quickly put it in the net.
• Horrigan scored his fourth goal of the game and 34
th of the season at the 2:58 mark, assisted by Chambers.
• Jack Tortolani drew Denver within seven at halftime (9-2), scoring his ninth goal of the season with 2:00 left on the clock.
• After two quarters, Providence led in shots (25-10), shots on goal (14-6) and won 7-13 face-off opportunities.
3RD QUARTER:
• Denver cut the deficit to four (9-5) with three-unanswered goals through the first 10:26 of the third quarter.
• Bell halted Denver's run with his second goal of the game at the 2:37 mark. His goal was unassisted and gave Providence a 10-5 lead.
• At the intermission, the Friars maintained their five-goal lead (10-5).
• Denver outshot Providence 12-5 in the third quarter.
4TH QUARTER:
• The first 11 minutes of the fourth quarter was scoreless until Denver broke through at the 4:00 minute mark. Tzagournis scored the goal and was assisted by Cody Malawsky.
• It marked the only goal of the quarter as the Friars held on for the 10-6 victory.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Providence clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship. Head Coach
Bobby Benson helped Providence claim a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament in each of his three seasons at the helm.
• The Friars defeated Denver for the first time in program history. Entering Saturday's match-up, the Pioneers held a 15-0 record over Providence.
• Providence earned its first victory over a ranked opponent this season. The Friars entered the game 0-5 on the year vs. nationally ranked teams.
• Horrigan finished the day with a game-high four goals, including two man-up tallies. He ranks 16
th all-time in career scoring at Providence (131 points) and moved into fourth all-time in career goals (107).
• Horrigan leads the nation in man-up goals this season, with 11.
• Chambers and Bell each finished the day with two goals and two assists.
• Chambers tied his career high with four points. Earlier this year, he notched four points on two goals and two assists against Bryant.
• Bell is the Friars' all-time leading scorer and with his four points against Denver, he now owns 223 career points on 64 goals and a program-best 159 assists.

Dan Donahue earned the win between the pipes with eight saves.
•
Quinn McConnaughey won 12-19 faceoffs for the Friars and he picked up a team-best six ground balls.
• Providence led the game in shots (36-26), shots on goal (19-14) and face-off victories (12-20).
• The Friars were 2-3 in man-up opportunities.

• Providence concludes its regular-season schedule on Friday, April 25 against St. John's. The game will be played on Chapey Field at Anderson in Providence, R.I. Opening faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m. and the match-up will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network / FloCollege.
